cratei1 In an effort to abate the flames.
PowersVl centrifugal pumps have
been Installed and are pouring a stream
of earth Into the vortex, but the fire
burns as fiercely as before.
Since the well began burning, July
4, more than 5.00ft,000 barrels have
been destroyed. The oil Is valued at
$1 a barrel.

San Francisco, Aug. 17. Two 19-year-old
highwaymen held up William Iee
early today and when he failed to obey
their orders they beat him almost to
death at Eighteenth and Dolores streets
In the Mission.
Iee was on his way home when the
youthful thugs stepped up to him and
demanded his money. At first he started
to obey, but upon looking at the boys
he decided they were either Joking or
drunk and started to walk on. One
thug hit him In the bank of the head
with a blackjack, felling him. The
?ther struck film a heavy blow In the
ace. While he lay almost unconsrta.ua
thev kicked him brutally and searched
his pookets. Iee was picked up by a
policeman and taken to the Central
Bmergeney hospital, where he Is in a
critical condition. The young highway
men escaped.

today are investigating a clash between
a gang of young hoodlums and several
Chinese yesterday. Fook Chung, a young
Chinese, was fatally stoned by the
boys, and Charles Carter, a seven-yecr-
old lad, was pursued bv a crowd of In
furiated celestials.

Congressman Sherman, who was taken

indication that the ceremonies tomorrow
will be entirely sucssful.

as much fun as he did on the Fourth

feature of the program. Republican
marching clubs from various cities, with

mill In operation at Heiihen. on the
