V I THE OREGON DAILY - JOURNAL PORTLAND, , MONDAY EVENING, AUGUST 17. 1008.. ,11 WORLD'S MARKETS TODAY HARRIMflN IN BUTTER SUPPLY IS CUT 111 HALF Market So Finn That Al most Any Quality Will To day Bring Top Trice. Front street fen tares: irnt scarcity or butter. Tomntnes are very firm. All cash grains are firm. Hay market In good shape. AVatermelotiB are quite active. Many values on cantaloupes. 1 tressed infills dolnir better. Troubles galore In canned milk. Greater scarcity of cabbage. Smiili run of steelhead salmon. Valla Walla onions are stlffer. Greet Scarcity of Butter. At the advance of 2o a pound In price a week ago, the creamery butter market is more than holding: Its own The market today Is firmer than during any recent period. Supplies are so short that a famine almost exists In this ter rltory. The tone of the market Is so pood thnt It is uulto Dosslblo In fact whiit Is usually the exception Is now the ruie una any sort of manufacture whether city make or outside make known or practically unknown brands lire bringing the top figure. The truth of the matter ls, demand for butter Is lully twice us ETent ns supplies and even the farm-made product is bringing wiinin ;i traction or two or the Dest cltv make. While some Interests are talking: of an advance In prices for the cnrnlnK week, others are discouraging the idea because? they cay the price Is already higH for this time of the year. A ear ago today butter was selling at 27 Wi' a pound, or 2'4r under the figure ruling hi stiffly today. For this day two years ago the price of best city rreamerv was 21 'fcc ;i pound and a year previous to that 22e. It will there fore lie noted thnt today's price of but ter fs tin' highest In four years. Efrff Fig-ht Much of Mystery. The fiht between various Interests In the eng market is much of a mystery although on occasions in previous years the same sort of condition has ruled. Quality is what counts and If a shipper ban something select he Invariably gets the best price while a shipper of poor duality elways complains of the re turns. rule to some extent tne pres- nt fight is the -result of the importa tion of eastern stock, there is a growing call for something better than the stocK which has been generally orfered es pecially during the heated term, when it Is nigh Impossible for some shippers to get their supplies to market In rlrst class condition because of the unavoid able delay in making shipments and get ting supplies to store. Finn Tone in Chickens. While, there Is nothlns of an excitable nature In the poultry situation at the moment the market is showing a dispo sition to firmness and values are show ing full recovery from the low point. Along the street todav while there was the usual small Monday poultry trade, the market was firm around 13 and 14c for chickens and 16 and 17c for broilers ami frvers. Tomato Market Za Very Firm. In the tomato market there Ifl quife a rrai'i itv of supplies a ml prices are do ing better than during the previous week. Shipments while small owing to 'he lat" rains, are showing better color r.nd quality than expected and prices are generally ranging around $1 a hox although once in a while a slightly bet ter figure Is obtainable for something select. t'antaloupe values are very much mixed owing to the same condition as regards quality. Some late arrivals from The fa lies are bringing close to; Up-quoieu jigures. I There is a very firm tone ruling In watermelons although supplies are quite good along the street, prices are today ranging around 1 l4c for loose lots and the usual 25c advance for crated stock. Brief Notes of tha Trade. Local cabbage Is unusually scarce and the small supplies are selling quite rradify at 2 He a pound with California stock bringing 2c. Pressed meat market is firm. Steelhead salmon catch in the Colum blt. is quite small and practically no chinooks are now being brojight to the IncaJ merket from there. At the mo ment the market Is supplied with this grade firm the northern roast streams. The price of best east of the mountains hogs has been ad vanced to 17 and even sf this figure the trade is over anxious to secure what few head that come. Even the ordinary run of hogs Is today easily worth J6.76 and will bring that figure for some time from present indications. "There Is a demand for several times as much stuff as Is now coming," say Secretary Plummer today. "While present prices are high, the Indications are that values will hold up for some time. This Is the time to ship, however." Cattle arrivals over Sunday totaled 173 head compared with 50 head on Saturday. 105 head this day a year ago. 25 head two years ago. and 3fl head three years ago for the came period. The market Is unusually stiff and today's values show an advance of inc. an the way through the market. Best select steers have reached 14.25 and buyers ase anxious to take hold even at this rise. Other lines of cat tle are advanced In proportion. While the sheep market Is uuiet the market Is holding quite well general values being about unchanged. There were no receipts of sheep over Sunday. Each day, Bay State, the stock which is supposed to be the foundation one of his campaign, was traded in 4 (O.oOO shares, or an aggregate of over 2,000,000 Jri both markets, breaking all records for volume. At the same time Mr. Lawson's Yukon, First National Copper, Trin ity ajid Lawson's Mexican, under tremendous activities, advanced 50 per cent. Owing to the fact that our Mr. Clapp has been Mr. Lawson's private secretary for the past 10 years, and is vice-president of his Mexican properties, and to the act that our house is the only one Mr. Lawson has ever al lowed the use of his name in securing business, we have done an enormous volume. We are prepared to execute orders in all of Mr. Law son's stocks and all stocks listed on the New York and Boston Stock Exchanges and Curbs. W hile Mr. Law son's invariable rule is to treat impartiay all stock ex changes and responsible curb houses in all of his cam paigns, and while he refuses to recommend any particular house, we have his permission to use his name as our reference.
