Down under the crust of convention and the veneer of civilization, in the hearts of every one, Is the yearnlnf to get out under the bright blue sky ayfsy from the brick and the towering "pil lars of stone to where the breeses bloyr fresh from the sea and the mountain and the vey silence hums with the ab sence of machinery or the crash and rattle of the city's roar. People of New York, stricken bv the heat of summer and wilted down by the furnace, breath of the city, turn their faces up to where far above them they can see little streaks of sky along the topmost rims of the man-made canyons of brick and stone and steel, and, dreaming of the woods and streams, the sky and the sea, die. For them there is no escape from the shriveling heat, the dust, the noise, the rush ana roar of the city. Out here along the western edge of the world It is different. The sun ends down no molten shafts to melt the marrow and sear the brain. Feo- Fle do not wilt in the face of the wind, t may be warm, but It is seldom hot, nJ more than all else, on every hand stretches the wood and the meadow, the river, the rivulet and the sea, easy of access and Invltlnn. And Portland people are accepting the invitation more each year as the town grows out and up and the streets get hot with the summer sun. There are few cities In the country frlnrlnr the town.
