The council yesterday voted down the ordinance Introduced by Councilman Kellaher to drive hawkers and peddlers o(T the city streets. The members con sidered the measure too drastic and, while most of them favored driving the hawkers from the downtown streets, they were equally In favor of allowing them to sell their wares In the residence districts. Councilman Baker explained that the ordinance was Introduced at the request oi about 300 business men. who have been annoyed with the hawkers- Baker explained that these men pay high rents and are forced into dl rect competition with the hawkers, who pay but a nominal sum for their li censee. The ordinance stipulates that the wires shnll be underground by No vember 1. Hawthorne avenue Is about to be paved with a hard-surface pave ment, but the measure is only a fore runner of others to compel the compa nies to place all their wires and con duits east of the river underground. Rushlight, brother of Council man A. G. Rushlight, died yesterday at the latter's home. 605 East Eleventh street of tuberculosis. Mr. Rushlight lived In Alaska for about 14 years un til two years ago when he returned to Portland. Since his return he had made his home with his brother and becuma well and favorably known to a large circle of friends. The funeral will be held are Mllwaukie cemetery Friday afternoon. "Mount Taboj- a Public Park," Is to be the subject of discussion at a meet ing of the Mount Tabor Improvement ciiH tonight in Woodmen, hall, on West avenue. The club wants the park board to buy at least 169 acres on Mount Ta bor for a public park, in accordance with the Olmstead plans, although Com missioner Lang has said that the cltv cannot afford to buy more than 40 or 60 acres.
