An unusually dense fog hung over the
entrance to Columbia river all of yes
terday and no shipping passed In until
late In the evening. The San Francisco
liner State of California got out during
the night, although It was still thick
and blowing a strong breeie. The com
ing up of the wlyil cleared the fog.

the river wax the German steamer
Arabia. Captain Neumann, of the Port

The French bark Thiers hs on the way
to Portland in ballast from Belfast,
Ireland. This Is the longest
undertaken by a vessel In ballast for

that It could not lie done except at a
heavy loss by any other vessel than
one drawing bounty from the French
govern ment.
The Thiers is wen known here, as Is
also her master. Captain Quatreveaux.
She was here last fall and took a carta
of wheat to Europe. The vessel sailed
under the British flag up till a few
years ago when she was Dartlv wrecked
nnd sold. A French firm In which Cap
tain Quatreveaux Is Interested pur
chased the wreck and rebuilt It In a
trench yard.
