state of affaire exists in ths commis
sioned personnel of the Mara Island
navy vard. Captain John M. Robinson.
commanding the receiving ship Imln-
nendence, was retired as a commodore
June JO, thereby ranking Captain
Phelps,' the commandant. Captain Ii
Milton. Captain of the yard, and all
captains of ships at the yards. Being
kept on duty in command or tne jnne-
pendence. he Is flying the senior offi
cer's pennant on the Independence, when
he Is In command of the ship as com
modore. He la senior officer to all
the captains who ranked him prior to
June 30.
It Is not anticipated that there will
be any conflict of authority or other
serious consequence as a result of this
unusual situation.- Of course, Captain

Oakland, Cal., Aug. 4. Captain Rich
ard W. Nye, master mariner, and the
father of B children, was taken to San
Quantln prison today to begin a three
years1 term for grand larceny.
Captain Nye was formerly one of ths
most daring skippers that sailed from
San Francisco. He has been In hard
luck, and last winter took a job as
watchman On a vessel at anchor In tho
basin here.
He stole articles valued at f 1.000 from
the veaael. when arrala-ned In court he
admitted his guilt, nnd said his children
drove him to theft. The watchman's
pay was not enough, he said, to enable
him to support his children, and be was
ternptea and fell.

80 years of age, who died at his horns
near Fnlloraath last Wednesday, was
born In Scotland. H moved to Aus
tralia In 1KB0. was married to Miss
Annie Murray, In Melbourne, In 1860
He returned to London and Scotland.
and from there came to the Pacific
coast by way of New York and Panama.
After spendlnar the winter in Call
fornla he came to Corvallls. Or. In 1165
Mr. and Mrs. Gray moved on a farm
near Philomath, where tha deceased has
since lived continuously.
Hie aged wife still survives him. Of
a family of seven children only two are
living, a. m. urav ana Isabella tirav
of philomath.
Mr. Gray was a member of tha Pres
byterian church.

Rainier, Or., Aug. 4. A forest fire Is
raging about one and a half milea back
of town, above the Wilson mill. The
fire Is consuming some verv valuable
timber belonging to the Wlllard-Case
Lumber company, yesterday afternoon
It had burned along the olanked road
and burned down several telephone poles
and wires.

V. Pope, Tt years of age, who died Sun
day, had been a prominent resident of

Dr. Pope was born In Manchester. Ill
August 4, 1836. In 1862 ha enlisted with

til 186 4. when he was discharged on ac
count or disability.

f- He was always prominent In the ud
building of ths city and had represented
Washington county in the legislature.
In 1888 he was married to Lauretta
D'SIsque. who, with the following chil
dren survive him; O. M. Pope, HUls
horo: Miss M. E. Pope and Ida Pope,
Forest Grove. The funeral servlcea were
held at the home Monday at 2 o'clock.
The body was taken to Portland for
cremation.

of scissors -cut her throat and wrist

call was sent for doctors, and she was
taken to ths hospital. After working

ris, H. C. Mahon and Glenn O. Bassett
of this citv, who a few days ago bought
the sawmill at Corvallls from the Sun
set Lumber company, yesterday filed
with the Lane county clerk articles of
Incorporation of the Occidental Lumber
company, with headauartera in Rncene.
and with a capital stock of $8,000. The
new company nas taken charge of the
mill, and will soon enlarcre it from a
capacity of 30,000 feet per day to 60,000.

Jacksonville, Or., Aug. 4. Patrick J.
Ryan. 78 years of age, a pioneer mer
chant of Jacksonville, died Monday nt
hla home In this city. Mr. Ryan was
born in Thurles, Tlpperary county, Ire
land. In 1842 he came to America and
lived for ten yeara with his parents In
Edinburgh, Ind.
In 1853 he Joined an emigrant train
which crossed the plains by ox team.
Mr. Hargrove and Champion Pavne of
Ashland were members of the emigrant
train.
Mr. Ryan stopped at Oregon City for
about one month. He then came to
Jacksonville, where he had resided con
tinuously since.
After coming to Jacksonville he
clerked for two years for Dan Kenney.
