Under the call of the colored men's committee. Issued several days ago, a number of the colored voters of the city met last night and decided to form a club and work for the election of the Taft ticket so far as Oregon and Multnomah coun ty Is concerned. Rev. B. B. B. Johnson, pastor of the Mount Olive church, called the meeting to order and out lined its purpose. He said that he had met President Roosevelt personally and had a great admiration for him and for what he had done as president of tb United Statos. He also Indorsed tho work and policies of Mr. Taft. The object in calling the meeting together was to form an association of the col ored voters which would unite in the support of the Republican ticket at tho election In November. After the address by Rev. Johnson a temporary organization of the club was effected by the election of "Dollar BUI" St. Clair as temporary chairman and J. A. Merrlman as temporary secretary. The temporary organization will send petitions to be circulated among the colored voters with a view -of increas ing the membership of the club and during the campaign the organization will work to line up all the colored vote for the Republican ticket. LAfit night 22 signed tho roll, and It Is expected the membership will reach 300. Leaving Portland yesterday nfternoon, Mazamas reached Castlerock last evening, remained there overnight and 'today they Journeyed to Toutles river bridge, from where the start will bo made tomorrow morning on their as cent of Mount .''t. Helens. This la their annual outing and will occupy two weeks, the nseent of the mountain be ing supplemented by a number of side trips. The. party will loave Toutles river bridge tomorrow morning, mul by even ing inev will be In . amp at Spirit lake. , 3 , L' :i 0 f.'-et iihoe sea level, where tin' j main headquarters for the outing have been establish, d. From this point a I compete circuit of the mountain above j the timber !!ne .an be made in three i days, without any difficulty. .St. Helens can be climbed "from utmost any ap- proach. althotigh the easiest climb is , from the south and east. ; The height of the mountain, na ascer tained bv the Mnxama hypometrlo party on July 19. 1908, Is 9.7;ltl feet. Spirit lake, so claimed by tho Indians because without apparent reason the lake gets rouh about 4 o'clock every afternoon, is a beautiful sheet of water about three miles long and one und a half miles wide. Trout aro abundant . In It. as the lake is not entered by any glacial stream. It has line sloping beaches, and affords delightful bathing Portions of the lake are very deep, and the extreme depths have never been as certained. ' Beautiful Lakes to Visit. One of the plensantest side trips is ; to American lake, about one and a half miles north of Hplrlt lake and l.f.20 feet higher. To tho southwest Is Echo lake, and Cnthedral canyon. A basaltic dyke resembling a cathedral spire marks Its locatltm. Tho wonderful Peterson caves, known as tho "Ouves of St. Helens.' will be visited. On the south side of the mountain occur wonderful openings In the lava , rock, formed by trees. The Indications are that theso" largo trees were sur rounded by some prehistoric flow of lava and the trees were killed, then the wood rotted nway, leaving these strange holes in the volcanic sides of the mountain. i St. Helens has been ascended by M'i zamas several limes. A party of seven i members of the Oregon Alpine club, ac companied by two Indians, made the as cent from the south side In July.
