It is the constant work that counts. Those wlin are satisfied to en ter the race and sit idly by expecting subscription orders to come to them will find that the orders will neither come by express nor by freight. Those who make a personal canvass of their friends, acquaintances and the public generally will find It the most effective way. JVhen your friends Fee Wiat you are derniined and interested enough to get out and hustle they will proffer you their aid. It is not yet too late to enter this great contest, and the contest manager would be pleased to see some enter prising young man or young woman Jump Into the race now and win the choice of scholarships through their own efforts In spite of the lead of thpso who entered early. Is there a boy or a girl in Oregon who can enter the contest now and demonstrate that he or she is more en ergetic than the most energetic now in the contest? To whom shall tho glory of such a victory belong? The leader now has over 80.000 votes to his credit, but what of that? Surely there Is some clever student who has neglected to enter so far who could now start out and secure 30 yearly subscrip tion orders tor i ne Oregon Journal within a week and thus catch up to the leader. A. Clcmenson lrug Com pany, corner Second and Yamhill streets. Portland. Or. j After a discussion of the work which will come before the committee of 16 to revise tho city charter. Mayor Lane, Councilman Baker and Councilman Cel lars yesterday decided that they would wait until Monday at 4 o'clock before naming the members of the committee. This action was taken because of the desire on the part of tho members of the nominating committee to secure only the citizens who best understand the work to serve on the committee. Defore adjourning yesterday the nom inating committee decided that each member should select fives names and present them Monday. If they are ac ceptable to all the committee they w'H be named, but the members stated yes terday that they wanted only the best men and that If any member of the committee knew aught against the men firoposed that thy would welcome the nformatlon. The desire of the com mittee Is to place the matter above politics and secure the men who will give their best efforts to the work. The lists of names furnished by the various civic organizations were studied yesterday and many of the names were acceptable to the committee and it is probable that several of tho committee or j ft will be cnosen rrom tncs lists It was testified at an Inquest at Bryn (Wales) on a young man named Owen Richards, who was killed by a fall of rock at a local colliery, that he had liberated his horse, which was attached to a tram, and In doing so delayed his own escape and was killed.
