At last the members of the commit
tee appointed by the council to name
the charter revision commission liavo
been able to decide upon a time of
meeting when all could be present.
They have set the time for 4 o'clock
this afternoon. The appointing com
mittee consists of Mayor Lane, Coun
cilman George L. Baker and Councilman
George H Cellars'. The charter com
mission Is to consist of 15 members and
they are expected to propose amend
ments to the present city charter which
will be placed upon the official ballot
In November and voted upon by the
people.
Four more Portland public schools
will be equipped with manual training
schools before the next term opens.
They will be located in the Couch,
Chapman, llolladay and Hawthorne
schools. At the Hawthorne and Chap
man schools small frame buildings will
he constructed for the new training de
partments, while at tho other schools
the ..Hsements will be used. This was
d-" Ided at yesterday's meeting of the
pi hi.ol board, which also elected Henry
S. Allen to succeed himself as clerk for
another year.

Saturday at 12 o'clock, according to
E. 1L, Deery, one of the Portland dele
gates, who returned laat evening, the
next convention city had not neon
chosen. Milwaukee, Ottawa (Canada)
Baltimore and other cltlea were atrlvlng
for the honor. The heaviest kind of
pressure had been brought to bear In
favor of each ulace on the list. The
atruagle oontlnued all afternoon. At 4
o'clock Portland was selected by ac
clamatlon. Mount Hood had proven lie
worth again and incidentally had given
Portland and Oregon more advertising
than any other city or state repre
sented.

90-Pound Snake Spreads Terror
When It Glides From Sewer Pipe
A huge snake, 6 feet 8 Inches In
length and 8 Inches In diameter 'and
weighing cloae to (0 pounda, auddenly
eliding out of a piece of an Iron aewer
pipe waa the startling night which
Created the eyea of workmen engaged
In clearing the quarter block at the
corner of Fifth and Htark yeaterday
afternoon. The snake had been seen by
the samo men Tuesday afternoon, but
fot away, ao that when the monster
umbled out of the pipe yesterday their
fright was somewhat shorter lived and
ha was killed.
The carcass waa hung up alongside
the building nest to the lot where It
waa caught, and In tho abort space of
half an hour was viewed by hundreds
of curiosity bent people. One man, who
had aeen the hurt anak which wm
chased by boatmen sometime ago In the
river, aeciarea una to be the same onn.
Numerous persona ventured guesses aa
to which branch of the mii fnmdv the
huge apectment belonged to a negro who
claimed to be an expert on snakes de
clared It to be a mocuasln snake, while
many others thought him to be a bull
snake. The negro was the onlv nn
who waa positive In his atatements.
How the snake ever got up as far aa
Fifth street will probably never be
known, but It seems probable that It
came up the sewer. If It was a. mnn-
casln snake. It must have rotten loose
rum n. snow or rrora on Doard soma
hip, for that species Is never seen In
tnis pari or the country.

Patrolman O. B. Murray Is today
thanking his heavy helmet for every
ounce of Its weight. When Rosa de
Clcco struck him on the head with a
10-pound top maul or sledge yesterday
afternoon the helmet saved him from
a fracture of the skull. If not Instant

Rosa, an Italian woman 42 years old,
who la known to the police and the
sheriff's office as the most dangerous
woman in Portland to handle, was
served with a warrant for her arrest
by Murray at her home at Grand ave
nue and East Stark street late yester
day afternoon. Her ex-husband, who
bears the scar of a wound his wife
gave him with a hatchet, obtained a
warrant, for since her return from Se
attle recently she told him she would
kill him before the end or the month.

belligerent wife and married another
woman.
In the police court today Rosa re
fused to do a thing unless an Italian
Interpreter was present. Her case will
be heard tomorrow.

A charge of insanity wss laid against
Mrs. de Cicco several months ago, but
was not pressed, as she agreed to go
to Seattle and stay there. By her re
turn she has broken the orders of the
court.

brought a beautiful bunch of Lambert
cherries raised In her yard at Munta

their weight broke down several of the
largest branches. It is reported that
a suit for damages Is about to bo
brought against Mrs. Butler by the
parents of a barefoot boy who unwarily
passed under an overhanging limb of
the cherry tree. One of the cherries
dropped and hit his foot.
Central W. C. T. V. held a business
meeting Wednesday afternoon. Ar
rangements are being made for the an
nual meeting September 2 and all the
officers and superintendents are re
quested to have written yearly reports.
A membership contest Is being Inaug
urated. Next Wednesday will oe Lady
Henrv Somerset day. and the program
will be in charge of Mesdames Roper,
Bleoth and Christian. Light refresh
ments will be served.
O. N. Ford and F. P. Bhaughnessy of
the Mount Bcott Improvement associa
tion, have been named as"a peace com
mittee to trv ami bring about a union
with their rival club at Mount Scott In
the interests of the whole district. The
Mount flcott Push club Is the name of
