phy was discharged! on the grounds of
drunkenness and conduct unbecoming
an officer. The testimony produced at

phy was very great.

"Modern Hlaves
A home mission work that Is doing
much to brighten the lives of men and
women who are without home and
friends is the Portland commons, an
auxiliary to the Olive Branch mission,
recently opened at 16H Front street
under the care of W. G. McLaren su
perintendent, who has had experience
In the municipal lodging house of
Great Britain and pn the continent.
The commons now has 80 beds for un
fortunates who need a night's lodging,
and It Is the aim of the mission to
keep In touch with the men, get them
employment If possible, and stand by
those who need aid, A monthly report
of the work of the mission will be
published In the Portland Olive Branch,
the pnper of the society, of which the
officers nre; President, Aaron Wells;
vice-president. Mrs. M. E. Greenman;
treasurer. Mrs. Florence Vielis; seere
tary. Mrs. M. Shelley.
George A. Rprnguo, 45 years old, Is
reported as missing by his wife since
yesterday, when he started from their
room in the Qulroby hotel to go to
Lenta to look at a farm. Rpraguo
weighs about 150 pounds, la or light
complexion, has closely trimmed whis
kers and rod hair.
While painters were at work on the
roof of J. Rrelter's saloon at the north
west corner of Russell and Mississippi
avenue yesterday afternoon tho roof
collapsed and fell Into the street. For
tunately no one was on the sidewalk
at tho time, and the painters also es-
capeu injury.
The State Spiritualists' association
of Oregon will hold their annual con
vention September 6-6. Women of
Woodcraft hall has been secured for
