The thing starts with li.e little home affair, then comes the club house dance, end finally the fort nightly dance at the Tlvoll. These Tlv nil functions are tne culminating so clal events of the Isthmus, and nothing short of sickness can keen the socially Inclined awav from them. The Tlvoll hotel cost in the neighborhood of a half million dollars and makes you tninic or the blcaer hotels at Atlantic uuy. ii was dtslxned as the social headquar ters of the Isthmus, and, like most things down here, It H admirably an swerlng the purpose for which It was designed. Good if Ton Can Hake Good. Borne writers who have vlsted the Tathninn have ma.de much of the al legod social distinctions which are aid to be based on the salaries of the dif ferent members of the force. Hut they have sadly overdrawn the picture. As a matter of fact there are fewer social distinctions here than anywhere els vou mav a The r'rht kind of man or woman Ts always In demand if he or she has mm social Qualifications whlcli will add something to the pleasure of the occasion. In looklnar over the list of guests invited to a social function you will see names that are signed to the payroll for $1200 a year beside names that draw five times as much. Bast Booms ana Woman's Clubs. The members of the commission have now a pet dream. They hope some day soon to see a tea room or rest room for women in every one of the towns in the zone. They claim tliat tne wo men need social centers where they can gather for amusement and recreation as the men do. and where they can have a bit of interesting gossip over a social cup ofVea. These tea rooms may eventually come from the women's clubs, .which hava nlfeady sons a long wav toward giving a stability to the working force of the Isthmus. There la a club at every American settlement, and these are ail members of the local Federation of Women's Clubs, which holds regular eetlngs at the Tlvoll hotel. Literature and the live questions of canal life form the topic discussed at the club meetings. Like their sister clubwomen in the States, the clubwomen of the canal ions are eliminating all social lines that have been built solely on a basis of monetary L.J1 - '- 1, 1 1 By FREDERIC J. HASKIX. (Copyright, J908, by Frederic J. Haskln.) Waahlncton. July 18. "The prin cipal drawback we are now experl- encing In the building of the canal le the lack of rational amusements for the people." In these words Colonel Goethals, the chairman and chief engineer of the canal, summed ap the situation with reference to the entertainment of the canal em ployes. He added that congress had ' "teen aiked to provide additional club houses and funds for ths pur--pose, but that It had seen fit to ignore the demand. It does not taka one long to discover the truth ot tha assertion of Colonel Ooethali. At Cristobal, Oorgona, Em . plre and Culebra they have T. M. C. X. clubhouses. Wherever these are, they have become the dominant factor in the social side of Isthmian life. They provide good, healthy entertainment for the people; yet to on American settle ment that has a clubhouse, there are three that have none: In the fown Where there are no clubhouses, about the only tfiing the men can do is to r" to the nearest saloon and drink bod liquor. And this ihey usually do. in i the four towns where the Y. M. C A. i clubhouses are located, barroom re ceipts fell off about 76 per cent with in a short time after the clubhouses were opened. Before the clubhouses were built the saloon was the only gen eral meeting place available. Th ' 'Isthmian canal commission hotels had no lobbies, the offices were closed af 1 m Muin.ua ni.nru u n .1 nnon 1 , ti 1 ,1 ira. ' garlous creatures and wanting to meet and talk, went, perforce, to these drink . ing places, It made DO .difference that the beer was flat and cost 25 cents ; per bottle, or that the whiskey was bad and cost 15 cents for a good-simd thimbleful of it. Neither did it make ; any difference that no chairs or tabhss were allowed in the places. Kven at the cost of standing up half the night they would meet to talk matters over. Strange Things at the T. M. C. A. i When the Y. M. C. A. rooms were ; opened practical men were placed at their head. One would not think of ' card-playing and dancing at a Y. M. C. A. in the states, but both are to be found in association homes on the isth mus. Bowling alleys, bllllard-roomu, frymnaslums, and many other places or entertainment were established in j. the buildings. Bowling teams were or ganized, billiard and pool contests wtie started, gymnastic instruction was giv en, pleasant reading-rooms with a com plete supply of leading newspapers and . periodicals, together with a large array " of trade Journals, were provided, soda fountains were established, and in gen eral the places were made more attrac- tlve than any other spot in the town. , The result has been the practical , i desertion of the saloons. The bow ling alleys are busy every evening, and j soma of the most spirited contests vr witnessed may be seen on these alleys : There ar a number of teams In each Y. M. C.
