While thev were good six weeks ago there has been a complete revolution In sentiment favoring Wash ington's senior senator since that time and close political observers who have taken nonpartisan views of the sena torial situation in thler state are already conceding Walla Walla's candidate the election. "Most eratlftfintr to Senator Anken Is the support he will get from hi home people this year. Formerly th Boxer' faction there waged a bitter and relentless warfare against the sena tor but the result of the Republican county convention nominations tni spring showed that the 'Boxers' are no longer an influence. Their candidate for chairman received about 10 per cen of the vote c:ist." The above statement was made by Carl Roe, managing editor of the Walla Walla Daily Union, Senator AnKeny s paper. Mr. Roe Is down for the state convention of the Washington. State Press association at Vancouver. While he was ready to discuss the senatorial race In Washington politics he would not give an opinion as to the probable choice of the state ror governor. "I attribute the rapid growth of sen tlment for Senator Ankeny in the past six weeks,' raid Mr. Koe, to tils un- enuivocal stand for the direct primary law and other Issue. Besides this the senator has undeniably made a splendid record in the national capital. He has probably more Influence today with the administration than any other man the northwest delegation. He has been unceasing in his efforts to open up the Columbia river. This is beginning to be appreciated by the big wheat growing belt of the Inland Empire, where the opening of a great waterway to the Portland market Is considered the para mount Issue of the senatorial campaign "The fight for the govor.Vrship this year will be unique In the history of the state. According to the terms of the direct primary law, when there are four or more candidates for governor the people must vote for a first and second choice. The candidate receiving the most first and secona cnoices wins There is Dlentv of opportunity for a display of political craft. After the election It mav be found that a dark horse has won." Senator Ankeny Is stopping at the Imperial while down on business con nected with his Vancouver banking in terests. He win proDaoiy aaciress tne newspaper men at the banquet this evening In the Columbia hotel, Van couver. Sunday Vaudeville. There Is only one vaudeville show In Portland and that Is at the Grand.
