THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL', PORTLAND. MONDAY EVENINO. JULY 13, 1908. WORLD'S MARKETS TODAY H1EL0IIS FOB EVERYONE Three Cars Arrive This Morning and Several More Are Due Quite Soon. i Gains Sharply After Damage L Reports Are Received From- West. Ths watermelon season wm formally opened here today with the arrival of three carloads. While one car had rrevlously arrived In the murker tlm mmnlv nroved bo acant that few people secured a taste of we watery rrult. Today's arrivals were generally In One condition, although one car was riper than the othors.. During the week fotrr additional cara aro expectea nere i " market along Front street wa In fine shape for the melons when they werj unloaded this morning. Everyone wanted to buy and In consequence prices held very stiff. While the first car sold nt io a pound, today's arrival sold at 2HLct a nnund. the latter price for some carefully selected stock. , Telegraphic advices received from ' California state that the demand for melons Is greater than supplies at this time and that price are very firm in consequencu. . Trull Trad Is Very Good, Along Front street the trade In fruits was very good today. 'Receipts as a rul were not very heavy outside of the watermelons and demand Is Increasing. A car of Bt. John peaches arrived In from California and found a better de mand that formerly because sties were a trifle larger than previous receipts. Loganberry canning season Is on in full swing among the housewives and the result Is a very liberal Increase In the demand. The Brooks association continues to make liberal shipments, but because of the better call the market is holdlnir ou tt stead ly at H a crate ior beat stuff. Btrawborry arrivals at this time are rather small and the market is quite firm with the top at $1.60 a crate for 24s. Quality Is quite badly mixed, how ever, and the price ranges down con siderably In consequence. . Currants are coming In somewhat more freely, and in better shape. Prices are holding high and. show no disposi tion to recede because the demand is al wavs better for currants than supply. Some few arrivals of wild blackberries are reported locally but supplies are still too small to basea quotation. Raspberries nre In quite liberal sup ply along the street with demand Just about equal to the output at former week's values. Cantaloupes Scarce and Hla"hT. Because of the very low prices that have been In effect In thlsjnarket thus far this season heavy arrivals at the start breaking down prices Front street handlers report a scarcity of stocks at present and In consequence values are showing a additional ad vance of 25c this morning. Another car is due tomorrow morning. Cherry market U still verv slow be rnnAe of the nress of supplies. C'anners are handling but a small percent of their usual output because of the over finn; rrn(Mtlnn of the canned fruit mar ket, due mostly to the very high values that have ruled .during the past two years.
