SATURDAY CONCERT ,
KNOTT AND RODNEY
of Texas put it:
"Why, this Is the first time ln my
memory that the delegates themselves
have actually had a chance to name
candidate for vice-president, let alone
president. It Is refreshing In Its
uniqueness."
Other delegates said the same thing.
And so they gathered ln little knots of
two and three and discussed their In
dividual candidates while the "fair
women and brave men" In the specta
tors' seats munched gum and passed
sarcastic comments on the appearance
of tho timid locking courtiers of Miss
Democracy who were slowly strag
gling ln.
Bryan Is ft Busy Chap.
All during tho two hours preceding
the assembling of the convention there
was a steady stream of political lead
ers from all parts of the country ln and
out of room 213 of the Brown Palace
hotel. In which Is located the telephone
which leads to Lincoln. Bryan's advice
was earnestly sought as to whom the
Convention should name as his running
ma t e.
Up to the time tho convention met
this afternoon It was said that he had
refrained from expressing: a choice.
Campau of Michigan declared at 1
o'clock that there had not as vet been
any crystallization on any candidate.
as he came out, D. F. Colilan, the
right-hand man of Murphy, the Tam
many boss, went into take his turn to
talk with Bryan. Tho New York dele
gation which was to have met at noon,
postponed Its conference, deeidlne to
wait tno result or Cohalan s communi
cation with, Bryan.
Bryan Wont Interfere.
At 1:30 o'clock it was announced bv
I J. Dunn, assistant city attorney of
Omaha, that Bryan was not Interfering
in the situation; that when the roll call
for members will be made Nebraska will
pass without mentioning a candidate in
order that no false, impression might
arise.
Murphy's right-hand man, Dan Co
halan, after a long-distance telephone
conversation with Bryan at Lincoln,
made a strwig plea in behalf of the
nomination of Justice Gaynor of New
York. Congressman Lamb of Indiana,
one of Bryan's closest friends, said that
he believed Kern would win, but he
added that New York was making a
strong fight for Gaynor.
The Michigan delegation decided that
It would cast Its 28 votes for whatever
candidate was favored by the New Y'orlc
and Nebraska delegations.
While the delegates were assombllng
Texas Jammed a big square banner on
the top of Its standard reading, "Texas
Is for Gray for vice-president."
Opening' J?rayer.
The opening prnyer was offered bv
Rev. Martin J. Corbett of Westflebi,
N. Y. who in part said:
"In the name of my Master and mv
All, go forth. Christian Pemocrnts, with
the constitution of the United States In
one band and trie gospel of truth and
salvation In the other and your labors
will bear fruit and your fruit will re

Thomas R. Marshall. Democratic nomi

diana. Marshall, In excellent voice, paid
a high tribute to the reunited Democ

the head of the ticket and Kern as his
running mate every doubtful state
would be carried this fall. Marshall
created n big laugh when he declared
that he came from a state where every
man was either an orator or nn author
and all were politicians.
Former Governor Charles S. Thomas
of Colorado nominated Charles A.

his services in the house and senate.
His nomination by the Colorado leader
was believed to lnilcnto that Townn

Folk Faoes a Small Boom.
Florida yielded to Missouri, nnd Gov
