The Olympio games, the most important or me great ?ubllo games of claslcal antiquity and he greatest of the four Panhellenlo fes tivities of the ancient Greeks, were cel ebrated at Intervals of four years, in in a sacred incioaure Virtnnr nf 7..US. called the Altls, In the plain of Olympla, containing- many temples and otner re ligious, civic and gymnastio structures. l)Mni Tprv mnnv votive works of art. The actual founding of the games Is anterior to history, but Jphltus, King of Klls, with Lycurgus. the great legis lator of Sparta, reorganized the games at the bidding of the oracle of Delphi In the ninth century, B. C. The regular chronicle of Olympian vlotors begins The original and most important event In the games was tne root race In the stadium. At first the runners went only once around the course, but laUr they made two and even three cir cuits. In the period after the Persian wars the Olvmplc games attained their zenith. In the Human period champlona from nil narta of the world came to Olympla to take part In the games, and the professional element made Its ap pearance. The Greeks themselves took less Interest In It, and the games slowly deteriorated. The Olympic games were ahollshed by the Roman emperor, TheorOelus the Great In 894. A. D., and were renewed In Athens in 1896. after an interval of more than 1,500 years. They were he d In the Panathenlaa atadluin, the old stadium of Horodua Attlcus. The games games- of 1SS6 were not as largely at tended as were expected, many of the best athletes not being attracted on the first occasion. Thev were held on April 6. the Greek nstlonal fete day. and on the five consecutive days The Jumping and running races were for the mosi nart won hv American compeu tors. The Germans won tne gymnastics, the Greeks the shooting, the swimming by Hungary. Interest in Marathon. Great Interest was taken In the Mar athon race, from Marathon to Athens, a distance of about 24 miles. a lireca peasant by the name of Loues won the rnre 1n hours 68 minutes and 60 sec ends. After the games King George crowned the victors with olive branches. The succcess of the games of 1J6 s- nrr.,1 their continuance, and at Parts In 1900 snd again nt Athens in 1904 the participation hv different countries was extremely large. The games to begin here next week, however, will break all records In the number and representative character of the entries. The United Kingdom, nat urally, leads In the number of pros pective contestants. France, Germany, Belgium, Greece nd other continental countries have sent some of their best athletes, and both the I'nlted States and Canada will be well represented In all the principal' events. The main attrac tion for Americans will be the track and field snorts, for here the Yankees will have the strongest representation. Canada Is regarded as a formidable competitor In the running events. SEVENTEEN WALLOPS -GIVE ANGELS GAME t (Pntted Preae Led Wire.) San Francisco, July 9. Seventeen safe wallops were gleaned by the An gels yesterday off Wright, Hopkins and W. Hogan yesterday and the Beraphs won 13 to 2. The acore: LOS ANGELES. AB. R. H. PO. A. E. Four two baggers and as pretty a triple as ever delighted random's fickle aye failed to fetch more than two run a for tha Beavers yesterday. nd the Seals breesed home In front, 6 to I. It was about the weirdest DroDoaltlon we have gone up against this season for sure. Silvers Henley, that long drawn out species of phoca vltullna, was the busy Individual who Bllpped the hem lock Into our teacup. But Silvers was not all, no slree. That boy Whaling, recently arrived from Busbvllle, was re sponsible for more than one of tJii scorelets the visitors harvested. Whll lng began to err In the second when he was at the receiving end, and men con tinued the dire stunt after he was shifted to the left erarden. But what's the use. We got skinnea. We know It We also know Los An geles moved one notch higher. Tet we're going to start out to overhaul them this month, and then look out. Pitchers Started Wall. Ktnsella started out In rare form, and might have continued serving puzzlera to tne delectation of tne grandstand naa not bis teammates blown up at the crit ical time. Well, Klnsy started off by retiring the Seals In short order, al though four faced him In the opener. Henley gave evidence of the fact that his trenchant soupbone was well oiled, for he caused the first three Beavers to Bky out, two to Buddy Ryan and the third to Marquis Bassey. We hate to sav It. but this Is the wa It haDDened in the fatal second: Mel choir scratched out, and WIW sacrificed to second by Curtis. McArdle followed with another blngle and reached second when an attempt was made to catch Melch off third. Micky La Lonea hap pened along opportunely for the vis itors and copped the third single of the canto, scoring both Melcholr and McArdle. Henley was safe when Cooney threw La Longe out at second, and Sliv ers ambled to second when a Klnsella bender nipped Mohler on the arm. The frisky Seals cavorted back and forth around their allotted stations un til Whaling was worked Into a frenzy of desperation. When the time was ripe the duet Menlev and Mohler pulled off a double steal of amazing rapidity.? KInsella's error allowed both to land on the rubber. Hlldebrand stole second on Whaling, but Impetuous Dora was caught trvlnor to no down to third. Whaling's only worthy feat of the day. Johnson's Great Hitting. Johnson opened no the second with a ripping two bagger. It resulted in nothing. In this inning Raftery was soaked again on his sore antenna and had to retire from the game. This re sulted In sending Whaling to the out field and Inserting Madden behind the bat. Whalen missed two files that dropped directly Into his paws and over threw second twice. Things looked irood for a hatting rally In the eighth, but after Ote John son's noble effort hopes fell flat, for McCredle was an easy third out. Rvan reached first on fielder's choice, forc ing Casey at second. Then the Viking came through with his mighty biff to ni'rp center tor tnree liases, nxiaav scored. In their half of the ninth the Mohler bunch got busy again. Melcholr and Curtis singled successively. Melch reaching third and Curtis second, the inner on wnanngs overthrow. Mc Ardle sacrificed Melcholr home on a long high fly to Bnssey. La Longe filed out Into left field, but Whalen muffed and Curtis registered. With the bases full on two errors by Ccmnev, Klnsella fielded the third out to John son at first. Portland made her second run In the ninth. Bassey drew four wide ones and Madden drove the sphere into left field for two bags. Bassey reached home, but Tom died on the kevstone station after Whalen and K"insella went out and Casey, who had heen walked, was forced a second bv Cooney. Tho score: STANDING OP THE TEAMS. CHICAGO AND DETROIT LEAD LEAGUES AGAIN There are two new" leaders In the big leagues today as the result of vie torles and defeats yesterday. Chicajro won from Brooklyn while t-hlladelphia took two games. The Detroit Tigers secured rirst place In tne American by uereacing jvew rorK. Detroit was the only first division team to win yesterday in the Amarlcan and by winning took the lead and also shoved the New York Highlanders into me ceuar. Kiberrield lias been hav ing his troubles even worse than Grif fith had and It Is safe to say that he would be a whole lot happier were Griffith still In charge: The Tigers are living up to their rep utation of being a great road team and have already captured three straight from the Highlanders. Jennings haa fpr the first time this year his whole team In first-class condition. O'Leary and Rossman, who were out of thj game for so long, are again playing while Big George Mullln has regained his pitching form. This gives Jen nings his entire pitching strength and the Tigers are apt to hang on to first place from now on. At New York. H. 8 Detroit 6 New York 3 9 ! Batteries Mullln and Schmidt; Cnes bro.
