' . i ' i " ""a ILL FORTUNE HITS FLEET Ten Cases of Scarlet Fever Discovered on Battle ship Nebraska. San Francisco. Cal., July 7. Tho re markable good fortune that has hovered over the men of the Atlantic battle--afilp fleet was dispelled on the Nebraska when !0 caars of scarlet fever weis c:Wovered. The first case w dlscov ered by Surf-eons Morris W. Baker and Thomas Ivryhlll. attached to that bat tleship, when an ordinary seaman went to them for treatment for sore throat, one of the first symptoms of the dread ed disease. The surgeons Immediately diagnosed the case as scarlet fever, and as soon as the commanding officer of tlw Nebraska could bo notified the pa tient was Isolated In the hospital of, the ship. EVery precaution was taken to prevent a spread of the disease, hut by yester day afternoon, or less than 24 hours after the first appearance of the malady, 10 rases had developed. The afflicted men were removed to the hosplt.il of the Nebraska, and Surgeon linker went ashore to confer with Pr. Hobdy, In charge of the federal quarantine service at this port. s It was arrnjfed after a conferenee with Admiral Bperry ann captain Nicholson of the Nebraska that the bat tleship should remain behind for dis infection and fumigation at the Angel Island quarantine station.
