Justice Bean Finds Oregon
Politics a flatter of
' J)eei Interest.
(Rlni Btiremi of Thr Journal.)
Salem, Or., July 7. "Oregon cle.?-
lion attracted muv-h attention thruuna
. out thd cast, especially the contest for
United States senator," said Chief J u--tlce
Robert S. Bean, who returned Sun
day from a six week's tour ul the east.
'Eastern politicians are at a loss to ac
count for the popular choice of a .Dem
ocrat for the United State. senator, ami
the election of a Republican legislature
pledged to elect him."
Justice Bean while In the east vls-
tted Boston, New York ami Chicago,
attended the national conference of rov
ernors as the personal representative of
Governor Chamberlain and visited the
school at West 1'olnt a one of the
hoard of Inspectors appointed hy Pres
ident Roosevelt. He expressed pleas
ure at being homo again and plunged
promptly into a mass of correspondence
and other work that had accumulated
" since his departure In May.
' "Considerable interest is manifested
In our initiative and referendum by
those who are studying popular govern
ment," said the chief justice, 'and every
paper for many lays oo'ntalnei refer
ences to the Oregon method of making
laws and the Oregon method of electing
Untied States senators by direct vote
of the people."
The conference was a great meet
ing according to Chief Justice Bean an.l
Is particularly timely and should h
noted especially by the Pacific coast
"It was truly .pathetic to hear tho
governors from many southern states,
especially, tell of their depreciated for
ests," said the Jurist, "where water is
scarce and where the clay Is being
washed down from the. sides of the
barren hills slowly devastating tha
richest farming lands. We of the west
can hardly appreciate what the con
servation of - our resources mean but
'we must and when we do we shall
profit more than any other portion for ,
we have more left to conserve." j
At the request of the conservation!
commission of Oregon appointed recent-
ly-by-the governor of which J. N. Teal j
Ik chairman, the following have been
added to the commission by the gov- f
emor: Chief Justice R. S. lieau. Com-1
mlssioner Will R. King, C. 8. Jackson,
J. N. Hart, Frank J. Miller and G.-Xi. I
