Queer Situation In Contracts. . It Is stated that Carmlehael of Salem has taken a number of small contracts : on the growing crop for English ac count at 10c a poifnd and on receipt of this rumor many fo'e;, ,?r fiJ2 be Invading the of nee of the PP buyer In an effort to sell their 1908 growth. Mr. Carmlchael neither denies jior affirms the report and there, may and may not be anything In It as far as new business Is concerned. Some inter ests are of the opinion that the con tracts are merely old transactions which are recorded each year. With their store houses already full of hops, the brewers 1 would very lmeiy iaKe a smaii prom on their purchases and allow the seller - to cover In cash Instead of the actual hop. However, the market must reach . several cents, higher before this would be likely to happen. If it could happen at all. The New York Producers' Price Cur rent thus reviews the situation: "The Inactivity In all our markets continues, and business is practically at standstill. There Is also an absence Of demand noted from brewers, who are generally complaining of- still further losses In beer sales. Crop reports are practically unchanged, although there is some complaint In New York state that lack of rain is hurting the vines, and - that If we do not get some wet weather very soon the yield may suffer. There In no change In coast prospects, and from Kngland and the continent the re ports are fjivorable." New Tork Prices.
