rank of captain.
Cnptaln Werllrh will turn over the

to his successors and a few days later
will leave for his old home In Wiscon

The retiring officer was appointed to
Annapolij from the state of Wisconsin

Is that for the past two years there
have been no accidents on the rivers

From the China Mall.
'The realization of imminent perils
". from the Inland waterways of the prov

for the more adequate protection of her

their proper control the fate of the

Hunan is drained by four rivers which

MISSION OF TINY FISH.
To Destroy Mosquito Eggs and Sate
Inhabitants of Malaria Regions.
. From to.. Chicago Tribune.
C. Kenrlck Gibbons has discovered
that all the pools and swamps in Bar
bados aro stocked with swarms of mil
lions, a tiny fish which gets its name
from its vast numbers and which feeds
on the largae of the mosquito.
Some specimens have been got to
England successfully and flourished
there In the Insect house, at the zoolog
ical gardens. Mr. Gibbons hns proposed
that the millions be Imported Into ma
larial districts, and his suggestion has
been acted upon with happy results.
The health board of Antigua, another
island, being convinced of the useful
part plsyed bv these fish In consuming
mosquito larvae, has arranged for their
systematic distribution throughout the
ponds and streams of the Island.
Like tidings come from Jamaica,
whither a conslenment of the fish was
sent not long ago. The secretary of the
agricultural society there writes that
the tanks at a certain hotel are full of
them end that he has been Informed
that there, has been a marked diminu
tion of fever round about, the millions
evidently accounting for the mosquito
larvae. They have also been sent to
Colon and British Guiana. It Is sug
gested that these useful fish get a trial
in tne maiariai renons or Arnca ir.
like the malarial mosquito, the insects
which carry the terrible diseases which
are endemic there pass the larval stage
of their existence In water.
The Swedish consul at Frankfort has
discovered another small fish named the
blue-eyed which feeds on mosquito lar
vae. At the request of the Italian gov
ernment some are to be sent to the
Campagjia, where so much has been
done in recent years to diminish malaria.
WEATHER REPORT
Don't fail to read Delauna Beach com
pany's ad in today's Journal.
Rhinoceros Blood a Cure-AH,
From the London Standard.
The blood of the rhinoceros Is verv
nigniy esteemed Dy wurmese and Chin
ese as a medicine for all kinds of ali
ments, wnenever a party or hunters
are 'successful In shooting a rhinoceros
they are less numerous than they
used to oe tne native peaters carefully
draw off the blood and bring It to
Rangoon stored In hollow bamboos.
The precious liquid is worth its
weight in silver.
Owing to wire trouble a large number
of reports are missing this morning,
especially In the Rocky mountain and
southern states. The barometer Is rel
atively high over the north Pacific
states and relatively low over Califor
nia, and a high pressure area overlies
the New England and middle Atlantic
states. Fair weather prevails on the
Pacific slope, and showers, heavy In
& laces, have occurred In Nebraska, South
akota and UDDer Mlchiaan. Tempera
tures are nearly normal on the Pacific
slope and above normal generally
throughout the eastern states, especially
in New England, where It Is about 10
degrees warmer than usual.
The Indications ore for fair weather
in this district tonight and Tuesday. It
will be warmer tonight In Oregon, east
ern Washington, and Idaho, and warmer
Tuesday east of the Cascade mountains.
