THE OREGON SUNDAY JQURNAU PORTLAND. SUNDAY - MORNING, JULY 5, 1008. 11 1 r fl 111 " II Aft ll . new todAx raw opat. NKW j01' ;, Ml HAS I TEETH Speech of Future Tcer Is Threatened Because of a Strange Accident Will He Make Uimself Understood? TITLE PAGE pF THE OREGON ROSE WALTZ. t London, July 4. Lord Lahsdowne'a eldest son," the Earl of Kerry, who has been returned lately to the house oil common from West Derbyshire, is for-My lunate in having been, unopposed at the f election. Had It not been so he prob bly would have been seriously handi capped by a nasty fall In the bunting field, which occurred afew days before the polling. He landod on his face and successfully removed moat of his front teeth by the swiftest form of dentis try known. While this might seem a serious hindrance to a potential parlia mentarian, it is one that la easily rem edied with a little time, thanks to the Invasion of American dental methods. Tlrst Appearand. This is the ilrstf appearance in' poli tics of the future (Lord Lausdowne and la watched with a great deal of inter est by all who know the immense in fluence on Kngllsh politics the house to which he belongs wields. There is no prouder nobleman in the whole of tb) British empire than Lord Kerry's father, the present Marquis Of Laus downe. He is leader of the Unionist party in the house of lords and head and front of the fight for political life which the members of that body are making against the more radical mem bers of the Liberal party, Aa the own er of Lansdowne House, in Berkeley Square, one of the finest private resi dences in London, and possessed of al most unlimited wealth derived from 143.000 acres, his social eminence is challenged by but few of the holders of great names In England. Brotber-ln-Xaaw. Besides all these honors, which inevi tably become his by succession. Lord Kerry has the distinction of being the brother-in-law of the new Duke of Devonshire, the head of another of the really great houses of Great Britain. Indued, it was the duke whom Lord iK-erry succeeded as representative of West Derbyshire, the former vacating" the post upon entering the hereditary, chamber. - The Earl of Kerry is 36 years old. To be sure, that is not an unusually youthful age to enter parliament. Borne, such as the present Lord Wln terton, reach the benches of the lower house at 21.. But then, in the average mun's mind, the son of a peer is asso ciated with wild, dissipation, over dressed actresses, "popping" wine and the pace that kills. A good many young men with Lord Kerry's "expectations would be sitting in the Qatety stalls or doing almost anything except com mitting themselves to the rather tire some routine of the house of commons. Instead, Lord Kerry married a most charming Scotch lassie four years ago, when she was just out of the school room, has settled down on his Irish estate and now has taken the first step toward following In the footsteps of tua illustrious; rattier. - rrc rrr?,:j 7v Twelve-Year-Old Lena Westerman, Student In the Piano Department of the Oregon Conservatory of Music, Who Played Her First Qo'mposltlon at the O. NEW BOOKS FOE TnE LIBRARY ' The following "books at the publio li brary will go into circulation on July6 BIOGRAPHY. Johnson Stephen A. Douglas; a Scudy In American Polities, 1308. Mauclalr- HIs Ideas His Works; Like most" of the scions of eminent British families, Lord Kerry Journeyed out to "South Africa and took part In the Boer war; but, unlike the majority, he came away with a reputation for ability. He won the Distinguished Service Order and was also mentioned in dispatches from the front. He was for some time in the Grenadiers, one of the crack "swagger" English regi ments, but is now a captain of the Irish Guards. Since his marriage Lord Kerry has been assiduously cultivating the affec tions of his Irish tenantry. As a mat ter ox fact, he was always very, popular with the countryside people who lived near his father's estate. During the South African war prayers were pub licly offered for his safety In both the Protestant and Roman Catholic churches of the neighborhood. Both Lord and i.aay .Kerry now live almost the year round In their Irish home, known as "Derreen, situated in the Kingdom" irom wrncn me rormer taxes nis cour tesy title as the eldest eon and heir to the marquis. Tie New Member. The new member has been a mighty bunter of big game in South Africa and other, haunts of wild animals, At his Irish home he Js a constant follower of the hounds. Personally ho Is a. rather good-looking chap, with a moustache that by Its size and texture Is calcu lated to-break the heart of any fair. Im pressionable maid. He is generally to be seen in a lounge suit of Irish tweed and is a persistent devotee of the "neg lige" in oress; In the atter respect he la a striking contrast to his father, who is one' of the best dressed men in the house of lords. The name of Kerry recalls many in teresting Incidents connected with Irish life. It was Thomas, Lord Kerry, who was the unconscious means of placing on record the extraordinary develop ment in Irish land values which has taken place within the past 200 years, i It Is said that In the year 1729 he was negotiating for the sale of -one of his estates to a Mr. Collls. The price greed on was 17,600 a year and the lease was to bo run "for ever and ever." A disagreement as to the exact place the payment wag to be made resulted In the deal falling through. It Is rather fortunate for the present holder of the estate, for lfhow brings in something like J100.000 a year. Origin of Ijowrstoft China. Krom the London Globe. At the end of the North Parade, Low estoft, Is the Warren House a place of great Interest to connoisseurs of china. It was here. In the eighteenth century, that a discovery of fine clay was made which eventually led to Lowestoft manufacturing the china which Is now so rare that it is almost priceless. Initial experiments, made hy Heylln Luson. In 1775 a fjnely glaxed and decorated "hard paste" was'-introduced, the effi ciency and beauty of which betokened brilliant success for the proprietors. When Mrs. Balsam started down town shopping she asked Mr. Balsam if he could think of anything he wanted. "I certainly can," said Balsam, with the Irritability of a rheumatio invalid, "but you can't get it for me." "Why can't I?" she asked. "Because it's a razor I want,", ha growled, "and no woman, can buy a decent razor." Mrs. Balsam refrained then from ex patiating on the ability or the Inabil ity of her sex to Judge of the good points of that tpnsorlal instrument, nev ertheless she bought a razor. Mr. Bal sam objected to using it- on the ground that since she bought it he knewr it was worthless and was -therefore likely to cause him to cut his own throat, but since it was the only razor at hand he was overruled by her arguments and finally consented to shave himself. "How do you like the razor?" asked Mrs. Balsam. For some time Mr. Balsam obstinate ly refused to express an honest opin ion, but Justice at last compelled him to Eighty fine razor. Best I ever had. Who picked It out for you?" "I selected it myself," said Mrs. Bal sam. "The olerk assured me that many women are excellent judges of razors, and that It is aulte common for them to buy razors for their men relations and friends. Ha thinks they come by their knowledge of razors through their experience with kitchen and dining room cutlery." "Don't believe It," said Mr. Balsam, still obstinate "At this rate they'll be telling us next that, women are good judges of neckties and cigars." Storm Left Hawk Only One Feather. Delaware Correspondence Columbus Dis patch. Lightning did some queer stunts hers during a storm recently, among them the knocking of all but a solitary feather from the body of a mouse hawk, which, strange to relate, still lives to bear mute evidence of the occurrence. The hawk was found under the tree which had been struck the following morning, when the hands on the I. D. Stone farm were inspecting the work of the etorm. The bird was barely allvo, and stripped of nil but the one "feather presented a sorry appearance. It was taken to the house and fed and bids fair to recover.
