Excellent Opportunities tor Young Men, but Not Much Money. The members of the Illinois State Academy of Science recently discussed the opportunities for young men to earn a living in various branches of science. On the whole they thought, the oppor tunities are excellent, though they of fer nothing very great In the way financial compensation. John Ci. Coulter, the well-known pro fessor of botany, said that the demand for trained botanists exceeds the sup ply. The moBt extensive employer of vounK botanists in this country is uie United States department of agriculture. The bureaus or the department or agri culture are not yet able to obtain an the men they need adeauately trained in the various branches of botany. The market for teachers of botany is brisks and eood teachers who are doc tors of Dhllosophy in botany command beginning salaries wnicn average aoout 60 per cent more man mose oirerea eie-ht years aero. There is a rine rieia ior Dotanivts in the Philippines, where a trained man Is wanted in every province to take charee Of the educational side or botany, espe cially from the standpoint of agricul turai science. Professor W. A. Noyes of the Uni versity of Illinois said that 26 years ago very few chemists wefe employed In the manufacture of iron and steel. Today chemists are required, not only In the large establishments where steel la produced, but also In iron foundries and ractones or an kinds. About 8.000 chemists are now employed in the United State. Not long ago nearly all chemists here were engaged in teach ing, while the majority of them today are working in industrial lines. Dr. Bain, who Is at the head of the Illinois geological survey, said that many railroads and mining and devel opment companies now employ one or more geologists. Their employment in BUS ND CEM IP f IS Valuable ScholarshipsBig Cash Awards and Cash Com mis sions for Energetic Students for Summer Work. i JOURNAL'S THIRD ANNUAL CONTEST LASTS THREE MONTHS Third WeeR of Contest Opens With Large Num ber of Boys and Girls Working for Free Tuition Evangelical Association. The greatest of these is me unuea states geological survey, which In the last season kept 93 geo logical parties in the field, each Includ ing from one to three geologists. According to Professor H. V. Neal, it is much easier now for zoologists to fet good places than it was a decade ago. t is difficult to find competent men needed ror zoological posts in schools, museums and the bureaus of tije gen eral anu mats governments, which re quire entomologists and other zoolog ical workers. It Is believed that the orisn demand ror trained zoologists will continue In the next decade. --The prospect Is good that competent men of science will have better oppor tunities in the future than ever before to earn a comfortable living. Capable and Industrious workers make a good living, but are rarely able to accumulate wealth. Probably men of science will always have to be content with rela tively poor financial returns for their work. The great chemist, Edward R. Squibb, sacrificed both limb and eyesight' in the interest of science. tYour prescriptions filled by us gives you the benefit. We sell goods cheaper than any other drug store ' .
