Winter, pastor of the First United Evangelical church, was born In Lycoming county, Pennsylvania,' near Wlllamsport, October 4, 1871. In child hood he attended the district school In the winter months, but as his parents lived on a farm and a mile from school, on account of show and aero weather wnen ne was small and because of be ing needed to help with the work when he Jirew older he obtained but from 70 to 80 days' of schooling In a year. At the age of 19 he entered the Muiv cey Normal school, graduating the sec ond year, one of the three highest In the class, after which ho taught for four terms in the Dubllc schools of the county. M. and three years later hli master degree. He was converted In 1889 and united with the Mt. Zlon class of tho United Evangelical church and was granted li cense to preach by the Central Pennsyl vania conference at Wllliamspnrt In 1896. While at college he was strongly Impressed with a desire to go west and take work In one of the mission confer ences of the church. There came an urgent call for men for the Oregon conference and he answered. "Here am I, send me." At the annual session of this conference In 1899 he was stationed at l,a Fayette, then the seat or i.a f ayejue seminary. After a pastorate of two years he was moved to Dallas where he served the time limit of four years. La Fayette seminary and Lacreole acamedy entered into consolidation the year previous to his going to Dallas.- Out of this union came Dallas college. This gave him the privilege of being college pastor again. The church here enjoyod a marked de gree of success and a commodious church building was erected, having a seating capacity of 700. In 190T) Mr. Winter was appointed pas tor of Portland First church and he Is now serving his fourth year at this plare. Mr. Winter has taken a deep Interest In Dallas college and tins been closely connected with It since coming to the coast, as a member of the board of trustees, business manager for one year, financial agent and college treasurer. As agent he added considerably to "ha endowment fund of the college. The Oregon conference at Its session In St. Johns.
