IleUiK -"Othello." By J. F. 8. Shakespeare's noisiest melodrama "Othello." was most consistently mis played , by Mr. Mantell and his com pany last night. At once the most mu sical and the most superficial of 'the tragedies, Its demands upon an actor are not great. Mr. Mantel has a, fine voice- tho chief requirement to play "Othello." He has a good presence and bearing the other requirements. What more could be nfede.1T Merely to play tho Moor all t!U way through bo that nohody cifljld understand anvining in.ii was said or else so everybody could understand everything that was said. Hut' he declined positively to stand upon either of these alternatives. He started In by letting you know what he was saying. Then hc suddenly switched from the council chamber dis tinctness to his scene first, with Des demond and then lago, where he prat tled to ono and then the other, said, "He loves me not a tall!" Neither did we when he talked that way. It must bo that Air. Mantell has been at "Othello" so long that lis has grown careless. It's too simple. You have f-to worlfup an enormous sweep or pas sion fairly drown sense In noise ami in tho volume of the magnificent word music. But that doesn't mean running notes together, or words either. If tne actor had only bad faith in what' was evidently ills original conviction, then ha might have got through the eve ning admirably and left the Impression of a magnificent jealousy and a splen did flow of words, llut Just as he was most Incoherent and musical there would como a twinge of conscience. He would decide that he must talk. The big concourse of sound would stop and he would speak in a conversational tone of voice. Vanish all illusions! tf-nter common sense and an appreciation of the fact that his jealousy was purely of . the melodramtic brand that cafi be witnessed for a slight outlay at any time. It's In words that "Othello excels "The C.lrl with the. Cireen Eyes, -or any one of a dozen other plays based upon Jealousy. And unless you recite the words so that they make music, not sense, you had better devote your self to Clyde Fitch. Hut if "Othello," because Its very shallowness Is an easy role to act as much cannot be said for lago. t ran ds Mcliinn had a task that threw that of Mr Mantell quite into the shade. He came out of It surprisingly well.' Ha was Inconsistent and therefore he played the role most successfully. lago be gins as a blackguard, becomes charm ingly wlttv and subtle and leaves you thinking him the prince of villains, perhaps, but a prince nevertheless. Miss Klngsbdrv fis Iiesdatnona tries my soul I wonder if she has been as bad all the week. I foolishly took It -for grantefl that sue was guuu wuu.-u. In "Lear." vviiy. neavtn omy kuuxv Y; W. C.
