Reinforce ments had been sent from the-south and me duafrected provinces or nortnern Persia, and Russian soldiers are report ed to be bIHimI vjth.the malcontents. The shah's trtiops came up to the city last night and Immediately out off communication. -The city has been sur rounded and field artillery brought Into piay to batter down the walls..- The last report received -before the wires from Tabrls went down said that Finch In Khan, commanding the shah's troops, had ordered a general advance and it was thought the city could not hold out much longer. It is practically certain that when the j-ersian cossacas once gel into ine city, men, women and children will be mas- sacred, and the soldiers Of the maloon- vents are making a desperate right. VIEXNA has doubts. Thinks Story of "Rebellion In North la Faked Up for the Czar. (United Presi Leased Wire.) Vienna July V. The reports from St. Petersburg to the effect that there is a revolution In .the north of Persia are regarded with suspicion here. It is thought the reports are purposely exag gerated In order to give the czar a pretext to make a military demonstra tion In the north of Persia. The situa tion Is being watched with the keenest Interest. Vienna, July 1. Diplomatic circles here ere keenly Interested In the recent developments in northern Persia and it is openly admitted that Austria regards with suspicion the advance of the Rus sian forces Into Persian territory. That Vrsr Nicholas 1s planning a grab of Persian territory and la using the malcontents of thft shah's realm to further his own Interests, seems to be the general opinion here. Dispatches received from the frontier state that the rebellion in sforthern Per sia has .taken on the aspect of a real war and that the casualtty list runs Into the thousands. The cxar's forees In Persia now con stitute a respectable army, according to the bent art vires obtainable here, and every ablp-bodred man of fighting age in the shah's territory is in arms. From the sturdy; Impetu ous, respectable, thought not overscrup ulous soldier before temptation gets hold of him, to the wasted, tremulous, conscious seared villain, is 'a long and tragic way. AsHr. Mantell portrays it, however, it is a most absorbingly real istic way, and inevitable from the first half formed thought of wickedness. It was a -great , interpretation, and the tragic horror of it remains. Miss Lillian Kingsbury proved a irnyit able support. Her l,adr MacbeJh was a virile character, Whlle-not minimiz ing tne unscrupulous, the overwhelming uuiumoii mm spurs ner on to ine ac complishment of the tragic 'and awful deeds, she succeeds in putting into th portrayal so much of tact and grace, so sincere a love for her husband, and so much of the womanliness that as pires for her husband's sake and not for tier own that the character of Ladv Macbeth takes on. a new meaning and pwww. ii wyuiu noiiiave Deen so great a piece of work had she not the com pellinjf personality that she has, and the deep full voice that carries out so ably the depths of her nature. Her Lady Macbeth was a remarkably able Interpretation of one of the most com plicated characters in fiction; some thing that transcends the personality of one woman and becomes a reading- of humanity itself. The cast was uniformly good, Mr. Mc Ginn aa Macduft proving particularly strong. The scehe which brings him the news of the raid of his castle and the death of wife and children was splendidly done. All the minor characters were ahly carried, although they are so unim portant by contrast wih the Intense things that are working- out In th ph.r. acters of the two principles that they botiu rejouvoiy or ices power than in almost anv other Shakespearean drama. The settings were appropriate and not overdone, and were managed with a remarkable celerity, considering how numerous are the channel. J r . . ' 1 1 . An Old Placer Miner's Opinion Mr. F. B. Ketchum of Yaeolt, Washington, is an old phcer miner, and has operated mines of hia own and in partnership'with others. He is a man of good judgment and careful and conservative, in all his statements.. He returned from the, Florence placer ground a few days ago, greatly pleased with the outlook. During his stay iri the district he had . not the beat opportunity to prospect the ground; on account of high, water. It was tod wet to sink shafts and pan out tjie gravel, but he made it a point to investigate as thoroughly as possible and to make inquiries of those who had been in the district' and mined there longest Among others he met two who had worked the gulches since 1860, one a man now age 86 who pans a few hours daily and is con tent with his average income of $100 per month. This gentleman gave Mr. Ketchum many incidents of the early days of the grea Florence camp, among others the story of how "Three-Fingered Smith," with only a primitive rocker, cleaned up $700 per day in the Florence gulches. Speaking most cheer fully crPthe prospects of the-Florence Placers prop erty, Mr. Ketchum said: ... "It is, qf course, impossible to tell what you have until your elevator is actually at work, but if the property is one half as good as it is pictured by those who know it well, it will doubtless, pay your stockholders from 100 to 200 per cent There is" no use in talking, it certainly looks good." .. . Send Us Your Address and Receive a Handsome Booklet FREE OF CHARGE. ' V - TWO MORE CLAIMS ADDED TO THE FLOR ENCE PLACER COMPANY'S 27, INCREAS ING OUR GROUND Tty 580 ACRES Our alert mining engineer, Mr. H. B Perks, writes us from our Florence m In frig camp that he discovered amother tract of placer ground oom prlsltor two claims of 20 acres each, which he has filed upon In the namaof the company, and this Increases our holdings to 680 acres, or 2 claims in all. -And the reader may be sure that if Mr. Perks thought enough jf this ground to file upen It. it is worth filing upon, because he 1 not one who "runs wild' and tskes up ground merely to add to his .territory. It must have merit must possess real worth or he would not trifle with It; there- fore, we suppose It would be -perfectly proper to set our mark a little higher than it ever yet has been, but still we are content with out former pre diction that this stock will pay at lost 00 per cent to Its owners, once the mine is In full blast. Mr. Perks exr""ts to be washing gravel bv the first of September; hence, he soys "expenses will bo heavy for some time, because we will have to be going some if we get the water flying by September 1." "I WILL HAVE THE ROADS COMPLETED WITHIN TEN DAYS" He wrote last week, which means that they must be almost readv for travel now, or at least will t before this week Is over. "I have ;s men em ployed on the road and In putting the flnlshlngtouehes on the ditches, and will soon be ready for Uie sawmill and the r'P'ng you shipped from Port land and Seattle The water has receded from Ftltes so that that terminal is In good condition again. I hae staked two claims at the mouth of Crandall Gulch, the Violet, 900x1,000 feet, paralleling the Laura, and the Crandall. same size, paralleling the I.ulu. This Increases our holding to 580 fcr?' 11 therefore, seen that Mr. Perks Is not wasting any time, but is working In all directions for the best advantage of all who are Interested in the Florence Placers. - THERE ARE "NO IDLE HANDS AROUND THE FLORENCE PLACERS CAMP We have a great property up there, and every man "feels It in his" bones" and fa working with a vim akin to the soldier throwing up army breast worics as he views the enemy approaching in the distance. He labors with might and main. His one thought is to conclude his task. The one am Dltlon or our men is to get ready for the monster giants and delve down into Nature's chest of gold.
