she arrived here only a week ago.
The large Norwegian steamer Tabor
arrived at Astoria yesterday afternoon
and went to Knappton to load lumber
for Australia, tthe comes under char
ter to G. W. McNear & Co. and will re
ceive her cargo at the Knappton mills
opposite Astoria The Norwegian
steamer Guernsey which has- been load
ing lumber at Tongue Point for. severaj
days will come to the mills of the Port
land Lumber company some time this
week to' finish the cargo for Shanghai.
Tha American-Hawaiian Steamship
company's liner Nevadan arrived at As
toria yesterday afternoon to take on a
shipment of salmon for transshipment
over the Isthmus to New, Terk. The
Nevadan Tiamertn from Seattle oh her
way to the Isthmus by way of San'

Five River Oaf Have Close Call In

bridges at 7 o'clock this morning.
The boats started from their respec
tive docks at tha same time, and before
any ona was aware of It they had got
ten into a cluster from which It aeemed
It would be difficult to get away with
out damage to -some of the boats. The

brushed fides and the others were prac
tically t-lockfd back rf them. "The
Joseph Kellogg cams d6wn through, tha
draw and found Herself blocked bv the
four,boats that had pulled out from the
Alder and Washington street docks at
the same time. Three of the boats, the
Bailey Gatiert, Dalles C'ty and Capital
Cltv, pulled out from Alrtcr street dock
and the Charles R. Spevicer left the
Washington street dock. ,
After maneuvering for several min
utes the Spencer- pulled out and got
away from the bunch. In doing so she
caused considerable of a swell, with the
result that dock owners are complain
ing of her having violated the speed
limit

From England Shortly.

Victoria. B. C, Jufy 1. Another Ca
nadian Pacific steamer has been
launched in England. In a couple of
months the Princess Charlotte will
steam around the Hern and assist the
Canadian Pacific company In its pres
ent struggle ' for command of Puget
sound trade. The new vessel first
touched the water last Saturday. She
was christened by Mrs. . Marpole, wife
Of the Canadian Paclflo executive as
sistant. Having five, decks the ship can ac
commodate majiy more than any other
ship onHhe cofest and will have great
er speed.
The Charlotte will establish a new
passenger steamer standard on the Pa
cific. Canadian Pacific -officials are
confident that her appearance will com
pel the Inland Navigation company to
give up Its rate contest between Vic
toria, Vancouver and sound points.

Windjammer Coming Here Seen Off

Portland bound windjammers
were spoken recently by vessels having
Just reached port at different places.
The reported vessels are the French bark
Leon Blum, the British ship Brablocb
and the British ship Carmanlan.
The Leon Blum was taken for new
crop wheat loading about four weeks
ago. She will ston at San Francisco
to deliver some general freiuht brought
out from "Shields before coming here.
The Blum was spoken In the vicinity of
the Cepe Verde Islands on May 20, anl
should be well aloru towards Cape Horn
bv this time.
The Brablock'wag spoken a few de
grees farther north than "the Blum, in
the vicinity of the Canary Islands off
the Moroco coast. She Is bringing ce
ment and general cargo from Antwerp.
She was spoken June It.
The British ship Carmanlan ' was
spoken within a few degrees of the posi
tion of the Brabloch. but the date is
not given. It is supposed, however,
that she was sighted In company with
the Brabloch because she left Hamburg
about the same time -that the Brabloch
Bet sail from Antwerp. The Carmanlan
also brings cement and reneral cargo,

Wst to Interview-the Canadian aovern-
ment in regard to the Canadian-Australian
steamship line, Sir J.unes Mills,
managing director of the I'nion Steam
ship company, and Lady Mills pasBe'l
through Victoria yesterday. Sir James
said if his mission was successful he
would arrange for improved service.
Two large vessels will be built, of the
same type as the Makuri, the largest of
the company's fleet, under construction

Aorangl and the Mnana.

Fraicisco last night for Coos Bay and
Is due to arrive here next Sunday in
place of the steamer Breakwater. 1
The steam schooner Nome City will
leave Couch street dock Saturday night
for Coos Bay instead of the steamer
Alliance which will be off the Coos Bay
run a couple or weeks for a general
overhauling.

Portland yesterday on the steamer Roa
