Pure 61 PROTEST AGAHJST HOFF'S METHODS President linn Defuses to Accept State Certificate t Without Inspection. President Fletcher . Linn - of the Manufacturers' association, 'on, penal of himself and other Oregon faotorr owners, has written a letter of protest to State Labor Commissioner O. P. Hoff concerning the renewal of inspection certificates. - Jt Is claimed by Mr. Linn that the commissioner y has v written manufacturers throughout the atate of fering to renew their certificates for $10 without a preceding inspection. It ia claimed that these letters have been aeat to many of the factory-own ers throughout the state, and that In some cases the owners are remitting $10 to ths commissioner and receiving renewals witnoui mspocuun. "It1 la a. vrv danserous thing for US, said Mr, Linn this morning, 'an case of the injury of employes, the charge could be brought against us that we had practically bribed the labor com missioner to renew our certificates without proper inspection of the fac tories. I declined Mr. Hoff s offer of renewal and asked that my factory be inspected before my new certificate was given me." Mr. Hoff declared this morning that it was only in cases where the faotory In question had been recently Inspect ed or where he was sure that it waa In the same condition aa when last in spected that be offered to renew the certificates. "I consulted the attorney-general about the matter and he told me that where a factory had been Inspected a reasonable length . of time - before, it would be legal for me to renew with out immediate inspection, always with the understanding, however, that X jwould have the building Inspected a sain wiinwt reiuuiuuie jengui u ume. - "The offers sent from my office to renew certificates were simply printed forma that' I mailed to all manufac turers, saying that upon receipt of $10, the stats' s regular fee. the license would be renewed. Of course, the fee foes to the state, anyway; but I hought it might lessen the work of the office, which is already very heavy. There was no Intention to pass any factory without Inspection, it being the purpose of the labor commissioner's of fice to inspect all factories at least once a year." It waa Barrett who advised Mrs. Flska, then hardly more than a child, to ' study the serious, drama, and more especially- the plays of Ibsen, for which he believed her admirably fitted. He predicted that in such roles lay her way- to success, and outlined in a gen eral way the future that Mrs. Flske has now attained. All mall orders for ticketa to either the matinee or evening performance must be accompanied by a check.
