THE OREGON SUNDAY JOURNAL', PORTLAND, SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 28, 1308. OREGON'S OLYMPIC TRIO . TELLS JOURNAL ITS HOPES ll.il ii..i -i - i Albert C. " 8y Manhattan. , New York, June t7,-rThree Ore son 'athletes ailed for. London this morning In the .steamship- P hlladeJp'hla. r With ;the Americana they go' to struggle for honor in the Olympiad The 'oallber of the Oregonlans la undisputed and those in charge of 4he team . are satisfied that extraordinary superiority alone will oonouer them., They are Dan Kel ley, "A, C, Gilbert and Forrest 8mith ' eon.? ; The. "coast"- knows them well and it Is not necessary to enumerate their abilities. v - All three were at the New Tork Ath letic olub last evening, along with the others who sailed for London, receiving Instructions from Manager Halpln. President Sullivan has been in Europe for the last week, but In his manager, Mr. Hatpin,' he left a stickler for disci pline, a maeter at the development of enthusiasm and an officer who will take good care of the contestants until they walk -upon the field In the Olympic games I had a talk with Kelly just before he Balled. He blends his confi- that he Is out to win. "But how about that strained tendonT" f.tl asked. 3 . ?-". .; .Kelly's Tendon AU Bigh. ' - "I see you have been talking to Mike Murphy," replied he. fThat tendon is (all right". . This evidences considerable caliber of confidence,- for Mike Murphy, of the university of Pennsylvania, . is some what of a trainer. - - He has charge of the Olympic team. "I do not ' know that I wilt go fast In the 100 vard dash." continued Kelly. , "I lean morn toward ' the broad jump this year. There la some probability that I will not be in for the sprint at . all, - but will do my stunt with the broad Jump." Kelly has been doing !4' feet during the period of training. Mike Murphy, ' the trainer, likes , his chances -and no doubt the opinions of the observers has had something to do with the decision ' of the managers. y "I did have a bad tendon for a while." continued Kelly. "It seemed when I lumped or ran that there was a hot Iron in my leg. Murpny naa stratgntenea out the kink and I will say to those friends who may be Interested that I never felt : stronger, more ambitious, or In better form in my life. I believe that we will Tarry back so many of the honors that . It will be a waste of time to figure on what Is left." Bmlthson's Opinion. Forrest Smithson discussed the matte? much the same- way. Smithson holds the hurdle record of the world for 164 ' yards, and he is of the opinion that he will continue to hold it for some time to come. There Is nQ vanity In such feel. i 1 rig it is a resource to the American athietlo world. A man must feel this W'? do riot see why the. American team should not carry away the great bulk of honor" said ' Smfthaon. "I have talked with all, the members of the team and they are confident. Thla same , confidence is a great- thing." - But how about yourself? Ar you in the best of shape?" "I can not remember any time that I felt better," said Smithson. "I think we are going to win." "Have you every confidence that yon will win in your specialty r I asked. DIAZ DEFIED AS A DESPOT Revolutionists Say Three ; Months Should See Mex ico Set Free.- - , (United Pre Leeeed Wire.) . Los Angeles, CaL.' June 21. -That Los Angeles la the real center of the Mexi can revolution Is the assertion of J. K. Turner and John Murray, who have Just returned from the southern republlo and have new light on the latest outbreaks. Turner, In discussing the latest news from the City of Mexico today, said: ' "This is a revolution,' and not mere ly spasmodic outbreak. The time set for the general uprising was July 1, but It was precipitated by the betrayal of the Casa Grande troop,, which caused the movement to becorsa publie a. week "fltnoVposHively that 20 officers of the revolutionary army have left Los Angeles for Mexico in the last 10 days. "One of these went direct to Sonora end arranged with the chief of the Yaauis for cooperation In the uprising against the government, which has at least begun to realise the Importance of the movement. "All the time the officers have been searching for the revolutionary leader, Knrique Flores Magon, supposing him to be In Canada, he has. been hovering on the. Texas 'frontier, directing opera inn. vr. la a brother of-Ricardo Flores Magon, who Is now In the county jail here, awaiting; the action of the 4 . ". TtiinMmin Gilbert. if I . Forrest Smithson. "Not particularly me,"' answered Bmithson, "but soma of the American winners will win. I hope, of course, that I may be there at the finish." This was all modesty on Smlthson's part, He felt thst he would win, and was resolved to put up the greatest fight of his life. His manner evi denced this. ...... . ; aUbert reel Box. Gilbert felt the same way. "Going to win?" X asked. "Sure, he said. 4 This answer wan characteristic of' Gilbert "Never felt stronger." he continued. "I'm a good sailor and the possibility of seasickness does not frighten me in the least Met .; a number of other friends tonight. They said I never looked better. That's encouraging, isn't it? - - - - . - "I believe) the Americans -will win everything worth winning. Jn any event we will eurely conquer. There are a number of good men en eur tem, and they should win the prise. I will help along as best I can." -- There are no better pole'vaultera than Gilbert' - He has not been showing his greatest strength. When he Is brought to the test he will likelv carrv off some of the honors, and the 'chances are he4 will eellpse all others at his game. The Americans sailed at 10 o'clock this morning. The athletes were first photographed, and they then turned their attention to that most important topio get away with seasickness. Ath- letios and mat de mer do not agree. United States supreme court as to his. extradition to Arizona for trial on a charge Of conspiracy." ' "... : When interviewed by a representa tive of the United Press in the county Jail today, Rlcardo Magon admitted that a proclamation calling for a revolution against the government of Mexico was issued on May 16 last, and it was to go into effect on July 25. The prema ture inauguration of hostilities was probably due to an excess of enthusiasm on the part of the revolutionists already In the field. "This revolution Is to be a struggle to the death." said Magon. "and If the fight Is continued for three months the Dia government will be overthrown. The revolutionists are fully armed and r.renAreri In everv vtv tn. lren tin thm struggle - for independence . for- an In-1 definite period. , . , . "Among the principles for which we are fighting are . the right of habeas corpus, trial by jury and the end of the reign of tyranny of Dias. "The people have - submitted to the tyrannical despotism of Dias for years, but they- are now determined to put an end to It once for all." Astoria, Or- June 27. President Lew is Russell of the Portland Automobile' dub has written a letter to F. A. Fisher, mm I Have the Largest Practice Because I Invariably Ful ' fill My Promises , Success isn't attained at a bound. It is made up of little triumphs. A large medi cal practice doesn't await the young phy sician at the college door. He must prove himself. . He must work toward success day after day, doing well eacrrday's tasks. . It has always been my rule to promise nothing that I am not absolutely certain of accomplishing. Realizing that no one phy sician can successfully undertake to cure all diseases, I entered special courses of study in preparation for my present work. For 16 years I have been proving my ability and building my success, I have mastered first the simpler diseases, then the serious com plex and stubborn ones that others neither cure nor. comprehend. I hare confined my efforts to diseases of men exclusively, and there is no ailment belonging to this class that I cannot fully conquer. I make broad and definite claims. -1 tell men that 'I can cure them, even though others have failed. Jealous doctors have charged me with claiming too much. But I ask wherein have I failed to fulfill a promise? My practice is now fully twice that of any other special ist upon the Pacific coast treating men's diseases. It has grown to these dimensions oecause I hare made promises and fulfilled them?
