THE OREGON ' DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND. V- SATURDAY EVENING, JUNE 27, 1C08. PLEASED Ull JHUWBT Harlin Talbert Writes of His Peasant Dealings . With Contest Editor. Newport, Or June 22 Oregon Jour nal, Portland, Or., Gentlemen I see you are a-olns- to conduct an "Educational Contest" this summer, end I wish to state to all young people who are con templating entering The Journal' Ei- noatlnnal fVintmt" that I WAS On Of the successful contestants in last sum mer's contest, and for the benefit of those who may be hesitating about en trinr for f fwr that they may not be successful, that they can succeed. In winning one of the scholarships if they t r v. a Harlon Talbert. r ro in to win and stay with It and -work hard. It will be no easy undertaking, but with a little courage and determlna. tlon-ami persistent systematic work, mixed with good, common sense, I feel sure any young man or woman may secure one of the valuable scholarships offered by The Journal In their ."Edu cational Contest." I was quite busy - last summer and could not put In much time hustling subscriptions, but, ' how ever, managed to work about 20 days, without assistance, and for this time I secured ' a scholarship in the Western Academy of Music taking a course In elocution, oratory and dramatic art, and as a result am now at Newport with a stock company for the summer, and I feel that I was more than repaid for my services to The Journal.- The Journal la a good paper to work for,, as they conduct their contests In a fair manner, and it is a newspaper which takes well with the people, so I do not hesitate in recommending their contest plan to any young person who wishes to secure a higher education, through their own efforts during the summer season, and ot course the ones who work hard and corae out in the lead will secure a cash prize which will help defray their expenses while at school, and those who do not secure cash priaes get a commission. HARLIN TALBERT. Letters : similar to the above from former : students who competed for Journal scholarships are simply ex pressions of appreciation-for what The Journal u3 II for them. Young Talbert worked about SO days securing sub scriptions for The Journal, and for his efforts he won a scholarship in the western Academy or Music, taking up elocution, oratory and dramatic art. As he says, he feels that he is more than repaid ror ms services to The Journal The benefits he, will derive from hi free scholarship will be lifelong. In years hence he will appreciate all the more the opportunity The Journal put In his way and which be . seised. . The young; people who are not; asleep to good opportunities will take advantage vi xne journal a mira annual contest and make an early start in soliciting orders for The Oregon Journal. Re member, that cash commissions will be gaid on all new order for the Dally, unday or Semi-Weekly Journal wheth er you win ,.- a scholarship . and cash award or not. All who secure subscrip tions will get well paid for their work and have an equal chance to win a scholarship besides a cash award. ., . JfEWLYWEDS SUFFER 't PAXGS OF PUBLICITY If you happened to be In the neighborhood of Fifteenth and East Oak streets today you would perhaps have come to the conclusion that the second story window of an apartment house on that corner contained a mag ret for the eyes of passersby or else that everybody you saw tad an acute attack of "rubber! tis." -t It Is doubtful if the f latlron build ing ever caused so many neck kinks as did that little second story window yesterday. If your neck doesn't trouble you this afternoon you will probably wonder , what It was and unless you happen to meet one of the grinning pedestrians who passed that magnetic corner yesterday you will have to read to know what waa the cause of so much uJrth. . -.' Nothing but a Sign about four feet square on .which waa gayly litho graphed the leg-end: ."This flat will be occupied sfter June 18 by the newly weds. Arthur and Ma Isle Kornahrens." The . blissful young people arrived home yesterday unexpectedly and per haps -are wondering why their apart ments are the object 01 such admira nun. ; iney never anew mey Had SO many rnenas in roruma. They don't know about the sign. It Is rumored that some well known' lawyers in the Fenton building could tell a little story about - how that naughty Blga came there, but of course rumor Is so un certain. i" ' ' ; But there are other things that the newlyweds have seen funny postals and solicitous telegrams and useful lit tle presents. The givers of these pres ents, however, don't believe in adver tising. t They are of the philanthropic type that seeks not publicity., CHURCH SERVICES Junior League, I p. m.; Epworth League, fa. m.i C E., 1:30 p. m.
