'. Tlis ' reneral merchandise store of O. B. MUloy,' In Scappoosa, ws broken into and robbed rly this morning;, pre sumably by tramps. --Th- safe waa pned by th aid of section-house tools, which the robber had confiscat ed from tha setion-hus. Just a year sgro Mr. Millojr'e atore was robbed, ths safe cracked and several hundred dol lars', worth of atoods taken. Mr. Mllloy and his. wife came to Port land this morning on the early- train. Just before boarding" the cars ths dis covery Wft rnado that the store had been burglarised. The men entered by breaking- down the front door. Mr. and Mrs. MiHor axe at the Oregon hotel. There was no money In the safe nothing but books and papers. The rob bers did not take the books nor the pa pers. After breaking open the safe they had a good time about the store for a while. Naturally, they were hun gry.' Naturally, they ate. Several do en boxes of sardines are missing. Also a brick of cheese ana enough soda crackers to feed a picnic for a week. On this account because the food was eaten on the ground it Is thought that tramps did the work. When the alarm of ths robbery in Scappoose 'was sounded this 'morning the whole town was soon sp In arms. By means of a line of sardine cans and a few cracker crumbs now and then, it Is believed the robbers, or tramps, left the city by way of the railroad track. That is, it is believed that they walked out of town. ,.( -. ?v,;..:.: After' carefully examining the safe the constable decided that tramps did the work. That the work was not that of professionals is evident because the crackers, that is the robbers, used seo-tion-house tools instead of dynamite or "soup." . . .. So, as tramps can offer no defense, the Scappoose Job ot early this morning has been attributed to, tramps Just the common, ordinary, everyday, road tramp of today and everywhere. Bring the whole' family down Satur day for shoes at cut rate prices. Sample Shoe Store Co., First ana Madlaon, or 208 Morrison. - I CiCGE LIEU WILL TiOW CRACK ROCK Clever Work by the" Police Eesults in Capture of : ' Two Swindlers. Tracking the attorney engaged by one pal to aid the other who ; was in the toils, the police were able to apprehend both members of 4 pair of short-change artists. The man who stuck by his partner received a sentence of 90 days in the county Jail and a fine of 1200 la the municipal court today. . Robert Fennell and Charles Aubray tried the well-known dodge of return ing to a store where they had made a fiurchase a few minutes before and ask to 'have -15 Lin silver changed to golJ. The store in question was that of Burroughs & Oault, Third and Clay streets, and Its cash register had once been- depleted by the self -same trick. Fennell was seised and was soon la Jail. , Soon after Attorney Charles Petrain asked at the police station to see Fen nell. Suspecting that Aubrav had re tained him. Detectives Hellyer and Pat Maloney and Officer John Maloney tracked the lawyer when he left the jail. He met Aubray and the second arrest followed. Despite an impassioned plea this this morning by Petrain, Juape Cam eron Rave Fennell 90 days and $100 fine and his faithful pal a sentence of 90 days and $200 fine.
