ltOiids , Across Cascades-. Connect "With Santiam Into Central Oregon T.uild South From Detroit. " I ' ,'.... Hunters, trappers, outing parties and traveler generally will be Interested In the Improvement contemplated by Supervisor T. H. Eherrarft. of the Cas cm da North and Bull Run forest re serves. Mr. Sherrard has built about hundred mile of trails through hither to inaccessible portion of the' . great Cascade forests. Starting at Cacadero there Is a trail about 15 miles long Into the forest. Krom her a 20-mile path -will be cut i throuerb the dense thickets to the turn ; mit of the range where It will connect with a trail running north and south on the rulge of the range. This trail will connect with the Santiam road across the mountains Into central Ore gon. .. . Build South From Detroit, Another trail Is to be built south : Trorn Detroit on the CorvalWf & East rn to connect with the Santiam road. s 'l heBe new routes through the tangled ; tinderfrrowth will save travelers across . tne cascades more than a hundred miles of roundabout Journeying which ' iiiey nave miner to nad to maice in 1 crossing. ! In addition to the building of these trails other Improvements Including the erection of five new rangers head t quarters are to be mads at a total cost of $8,000. The government work will j W greatly appreciated by the people t who livevin the wilds of the Cascades 'end others who find it necessary to . t ravel on horseback over - the moan t tains. The forests ' of Oregon are perhaps ' tne rougnest ana most unpassaoie or any in the world and up to the present t trie only way to cross them nas Dean by roundabout and inconvenient routes, (forcing the traveler to plunge Into the j heart of the woods and make his slow and tedious way- -through them if he i wanted to go directly across. Some i times travelers taking this route have ' been lost and never heard of. Three Hundred la Berries. Few people realise what -an Immense j task the forestry inspection service has ! to patrol the great vorests under their i charge nor how. well the little band of I trained woodsmen do this work. , Acting 1 Chief Inspector M. L. Eriqkson of dis trict No. 6, comprising Oregon, Wash i insrton and Alaska, is at present in I charge of the office at Eleventh and I Morrison streets. Mr. Erlckson says the redisricting ; of the forests under his charge will frreatly increase the efficiency of .the nspecllon service. 1 Heretofore the forests of Oregon and i ; "Washington have been divided into i large tracts of 4.000,000 acres as a unit j for one man to supervise. It has been ; Impossible for one man to do this suc cessfully. The forests have been sub .f divided under the new method Into - tracts of 1,500,000 t acre and an In spector will be In charge of each of these tracts, During the' summer months 18 rangers will be detailed lor this service. A there are about 30.000,000 acre of tlm ler lands In these states the working force of rangers ana inspectors win oe more than noo. . Tins is more tnan double the number formerly provided.
