Down on tha Willamette last night
there- waa a sight worth braving the
damp 'breeze that blew up the river to
see. The Willamette may-not b. alto
gether lovely in the daylight but trans
formed Into : a ' fairy spectacle with
countless ' small boats and graceful
yachts sending shimmering rays of
light over the water and marking their
course by ripples of fire it was a thing
of beauty. 1 ' .
.From below the bridges where . the
big white Charleston lay, a wonderful
object stretching out Its arms of light
In enormous ribbons that now picked
out a crowd of sightseers on the bank,
now a llttletnotor boat in the river and
now one of the other waruhlps in the
harbor to above Burnslde street where
tha sallboata svere maneuvering, ' their
graceful masts and sails -outlined in
Japanese lanterns,-the river waa alive
with boats of ; every description, U1
decorated .and all filled with laughing

made an attractive addition to the car

county court and Open the draws for
the passage of the sailing yachts. This
interfered with ' the formation ,of . tne
boata but the ateamera. Including the
flreboat and the United States fisher
ies steamer Nola, as well as tha motor
boats, ana canoes, made tha circuit
from Swan. Island ' to one half . mile
above the Madison bridge. -

Gorgeous Display.
Decoration covering tha front of the
11-story Wells-Fargo building, on Sixth
street. . have perhaps caused more fa
vorable comment than any other deco
rations in the city for the Rosa Festi
val, a total of 680 electrlo lights ara

The big building was decorated under
direction of its chief . engineer, Charles
McOIrr, and Manager Beckwlth did not
apare expense to maaa tne aeaign ef
fective. A row of mammoth roaea is
fastened across the whole front of the
building at tha third story, and in each
rose is an electrlo light. A few atorles
above is a row of stars, of electrical
design, and from the roof hanga a mam
moth Wella-Fargo company flag, 26 feet
long and IS feet wide, illuminated with
a myriad of electric lights. Rows of
electrlo decorations extend up and down
over the face-of tha skyscraper. The
colors of the electrlo lights and other
trimmings are pale green apd pink, with
a combination of lavender. The entire
scheme forms a striking picture at
night. '" '
The decorations . of tha Hotel ' Port
land have also received most favorable
