Crowd Fell Upon Oregon It was a few minutes before the gen eral ' crowd learned of the attack on Dreyfus.- Then there wss wild exoite ment. A mob set out to overtake the JendarmesSln 1 charge of Gregort. A ight followed - in which Gregort sus tained several slight cuts from tbe sa bers in the hands of the - gendarmes. The crowd fell upon Gregort with great violence in spits of the efforts of the officers and he: was badly beaten be fore he reached the nolice station. Oregorl Sated Dreyfus. " As military editor of his : Journal. Gregort was brought in close touch with all the affairs of the army and followed the Dreyfus case carefully from the be ginning to the end. His sympathies were all against Dreyfus, and his hatred was particularly strong against Zola for his defense of the soldier. He consid ered the transfer of Zola's body to the Pantheon to be a sacrilege and had openly denounced the government - of ficials for permitting it; He was InnlrcMl linon as belnsr almost fanatical In his ' views. His . paper yesterday printed a bitter article in which It was charged that the Pantheon was being turned into a sewer by putting the body of Zola there. ' ' ' -' - . , , . The exercises began at 9:20 o'clock this morning. After the singing of the Marseillaises Minister Doumergue de livered an address In which he praised Zola and eulogised him as on pf the great thinkers of France. He lauded his literary and political career and said his body bad been given its right ful honor. General Temper Good. ; I have mixed with tha crowd and I find that the general temper is good and the persons of various classes with whom I talked appeared to be Inclined toward pleasure and celebration rather than mischief. CHrefOXt Explains to Folic. ' Editor Gregort, when questioned by the pollee, said: m . , . "I did not fir at Dreyfus, I fired at Dreyfuslsm. It la revolting to see the noble army Of France mixed in an af fair of this sort, which, at best, con cerned only the government ana th Dreyfus family,"- af . Dreyfus In 2fo Danger.
