H. Walton, In Better Fruit. As ths greatest apple growing Motion of the sreat Pacific northwest. Hood RiTr probably stands preeminent In prlcee for Ita fruit It leads tha world and baa set tha standard of values. For several rears Its product has sold for the highest prices paid .anywhere In tha world and has practically marketed it--self Apples at Hood River for two years have eold from $1.60 to better then $J.S$ per bushel box for -the en- iM .n ttnati In the heart of tha Cascades, It it In tha i center of tha matchless scenic splendors of tha great Colombia river, rianaea on eecn aiae ojr lta ever snow-capped peaks. Its deep k.Anaia unlit streams, and groen- foliaged orchards, atretchlng for mliey before the eye, compel tne laminuigu y ih iod and tha most blase tourist alike, and causa them to admit that the world Is Indeed a food place. Situated is on the south bank of the Columbia river, 5 miles eaat or roruana, at jne msuth of Hood river from which It takes Its name, Tha river, whlth flows through a deep gorge Just east of the city. Is one or ma many ounma r iu """i srtows of Mount Hood. From Its neve falling source water Is obtained to tr? rigate all the land In the valley, and ( estimated to contain 100,006 horsepower, very little or which has been utilised. The mouth of the valley la a mile back Of tha city and the latter. 10 mllea long, ends at tha bass of Mount Hood, In area It is about 60.000 acres, 10.000 of which are estimated to be under cul tivation. While highly cultivated in spots, many thousands of acres of fruit lands await tha hand of tha tiller, and can be purchased for from 80 to 1160 fir acre, depending on situation. Bear ng orchards brine; high values, running from $600 to $,600 per acre. Orchard ing at Hood River is conducted on meth ods that have proven successful and sure. ' Having passed tha experimental stage, the beginner now has the 4eneflt of tha knowledge of others and avoids their mistakes. To this fact is due tha success of all classes engaged In fruit growing there and tha high value of land, the investment really being low in comparison to the returns, . , , Small Acreage Big aVeenlta. ' E.-H. Shecard from 1(0 trees on one ana tnm unn,TreTOT jiwh 82,042.85, gross, which nettea mm Det ter than $1,400, or over 900 per acre. Ludwig Struck on two and nine tenths acres raised 1,82 boxes of first grade applea for which he received $2 par box, or $3,858 in addition to the returna from 400 boxes of second grade fruit, which amounted to $400 more, or In all $4,268. - -.-- - - - - - A. ! I. ' Mason hae $0$ NeWtown trees nine years ld,-from -which ha marketed lest year 1.141 boxes, realising 12,602.80. The trees are planted 68 to tha acre, making an average of 844 H boxes, or 7fiO.(S r ten. The net profit per tree was $8.60, and I&8J.60 per acre or 12,04.26 on three ana one tnira acres. . - From IS acres F. Eggert sold 8,000 boxes of apples that nettea mm iv.ouo. . r The secret of getting these wonderful prices is In the fact that nature has endowed tha Hood River valley, with a volcanic ash soil that contains all tha elements necessary for growing perfect fruit ' Added to this Is a temperature exactly suited to their propagation, and last, but not least, methods employed that have been found to produce tha best : mi tilt. .. From far and wide fruit men come l rum uiuur uwuivii iu im ui these methods, simple though they De, and easily learned by the novice. It has been found that the apple grows best at Hood .River under tha clean cultiva tion system, which conserves the moist ure and allows all the nutriment of the soil to go into tha making of both tree ' and fruit. 8rravina. to kill all Inaect life that it injurious to tha growing of perrect appiea, is rigiaiy aanerea to, ana so careful in this respect are orchard- lets at Hood River that less than two per cent of the entire orop Is found to be Imperfect In this respect the case of one orchard can be cited that last year bora 1,000 boxes, in which there were -jflurlng tha whole eoqbut (0 wormy apples. Another feature Is thinning or picking off part of the fruit when It Is small In order to allow that which re mains to get more nourishment, grow to a larger slsa and not exhaust the Ufa : of the tree. While other apple growing districts lay great stress on the quantity of ap ples they grow, the slogan of Hood Klver Is - not quantity but "quality." Tha uurgv ui u gruwvra tu upnom ins standard of perfection has won for lta fruit a name for excellence the world ever and has brought Its reward. Never was this fact mora fully demonstrated than In 1900, when one of tha biggest apple crops ever grown in the United States was placed on the market, and Hood River marketed the biggest crop In Its history, sold all It had for $1 to $1.16 a box, and could not supply the demand. It la this that Is making Hood River land double In value and attracting many Investors. During the season of 1107, when the apple crop waa a short on and estimated to be but 34 per cent of normal, and was in many districts a. total failure. Hood River had from 60 to 70 per cent of a full crop, and sold Its apples for ths highest prices the world has ever known. The fact that when other districts get high prices Hood River gets still higher is con elusive evidence that its fruit la con sidered the best that grows, and that ''quality" pays. The varieties of apples that Hood River ex cels all other districts In are the Spits enberg and Newtown Pippin.. The for mer reaches the tables of millionaires f the east, and the latter goes to Eu rope and Era-land to find its way to royalty and the .wealthy classes.
