It Is worth about $8, TOO and. Includes 80 acres of land in Columbia county. AH of it will descend tit rt; widow, Mlns a. Stepp. STREETS WILL BE KEPT CLEAN la . Eren If. People Vho Litter Up Highways Have to -Be Arrested. - There will be no let up in the work of keeping Portland streets clean dur ing the Rose Festival. The story that the street' cleaning department would suspend operations today, tomorrow and aionaay oecause or tne noiioays was unfounded because the - department works along the same plan as the fire and police departments and the em ployes will work with Increased energy to aeep tne streets ana avenues rrea from dirt and refuse. - Mayor Lane and Superintendent Alex Donaldson are both anxious to have the streets in as presentable a condition as possible and nave asked tne oiusens to aid In the work. In fact the -condition became so serious that Mayor Lane, Chief Grltzmacher and Superintendent Donaldson held a conference this week tn which it was decided that the best way to secure the aid of the cltisens would be to enforce the law- covering me uttering oi streets wun sweepings from the sidewalks. This resolution will be carried out to the letter and all cltisens who fall rropeny to observe tne law will be aken into the municipal court jftnd fined. A second conviction will mean a jail sentenoe. Reports of persons sweeping the ref use from their stores and residences into the streets have - been numerous. and unless there Is a cessation; in the reports . and a discontinuance of ' the practice the persons thus reported will be the first to feel the -strong arm of m law. v . - All of the city officials dislike taking action in this matter but they feel that with the small appropriations and small forces of' men at their disposal for street cleaning work radical action of some Kind must oe taken. They say they -are loathe to start prosecution but despite their personal feeling in the mat. ter will resort to the law In order to keep the city clean. They say the cam paign they have started will not end with the Rose Festival but will be kept up until the people learn to regard that a proper observance of the law la the iirsi step in Keeping - tne streets and sidewalks free from refuse. - EAST TWENTY-EIGHTH . BRIDGE TO BE BUILT City Engineer Taylor stated" today that With all , the .- preliminary - work out of the way, work on the new bridge at East Twenty-eighth street over Sul livan's gulch iwould commence within a few days.-: Orders for material have already been sent in by the Northwest Bridge Works, and the difficulty oi the right of way between the city an the O- R. N. company was definitely de cided this morning. Many of the plans and specifications had to be changed from the original ones sent In by the company before City Englneeer Taylor could approve them, and this required 'some little time. The right of way trouble with the O R. & N. company formed quite a prominent part In this matter because of the diffi culty encountered In clearing the com pany's tracks at a sufficient height to allow the trains to pass. - With these differences settled, Taylor stated this morning that-he expected ' to see the: work started shortly., - : Support tit TTnlVSrslty Of OrSfOa.,, I Support the University of Oregon ap- i propriation bill.
