Benson Logging Company Will Soon
, Send Log "Rait to Sea,, i
the Benson Logging company has
chartered the tug Dauntless of 8ao
Francisco, to tow Its log rafts from
Stella, on the Columbia, to rlan Diego
this summer. The first raft will be
sent .to sea. about the first of June.
Ths company has three rafts ready to
be towed away and has another half
completed. Possibly a fifth raft will
be constructed and sent south this
summer, although the lntenUon at first
was to send only 'our. - -
Ths rafts contain 4,000,000 feet Of
logs sach. At Ban Dlego they are to
be cut up Into lumber In ths company s

British Steamer Dulwich Will Come
Here From Mexico.
J. J. Moore Co. have chartered the
British steamer Dulwich to load lumber
at, this point for Australia, and ah Is
expected to. arrive here in a couple of
weeks from Ouaymas, Uexlco. J
v The Dulwioh was here several months
ago.. She Is smaller than ths average
tramp eteamer coming ber In the lum
ber trade, her capacity being only about
J, 60(5,000 . feet, whereas th Ordinary
tramp carries away close to 1,600,009

fornia pioneer of the days Jf '49 has
passed away In th death of Levi Han
ford, who, for more than a quarter of
a century, had been a clerk tn th pen
sion bureau. H was 10 years old and
the father of Charles B. Hanford. th
actor. On the hlp Orpheus, Hanford
sailed for California, en January 1, 1149.
He went around Cape Horn, arriving at
San Francisco on July $. - After ac
cumulating; a small fortune as a nlacer
'miner at Amador.' he opened a store
mere witn Kooert j. Downs as a part
ner. 1 Prospering, the firm soon owned
stores at camp at Sutter Creek, Upper
and Lower Rancher and volcano.
Twenty years later he returned to th
east, and sine 1881 bad been in ths
government's service. ...

Rural Route Men of State
to Hold Sixth Annual
Meeting in Albany.
Tomorrow Albany will entertain the
men who deliver letters and newspa
pers to th people of Oregon. The Ore
gon Rural Latter Carriers' association
will hold its sixth annual convention
in M. W. of A. hall, and at the county
courthouse. There will be band con
certs, a street parade, and refresh
ments Interspersed with the sessions.
The convention will open with an in
formal reception Friday evening at
Woodmen hall, where J. S. Van Winkle
will give an address of welcome, and
William H. Boyd, first vice-president
of th association, will respond. Pro
fessor Kendall will contribute a read
ing, and there will be quartet music.
- The regular sessions will open Satur
day morning. Tom Richardson, man
ager of the Portland Commercial club,
will give an address on "Organization."
Bury I. Dasent, manager of the Al
bany Commercial club, will talk on a
selected topto. An address on financ
ing the association will be given by
Alfred C. Schmidt, state president of
the Y. M. C. A. The use of and ex
pense of operation of the motor cycle
