The teddy Bear mascots for the, fleet and their attendants have left for Seattle and were on hand to take part In yesterday's parade. By this time the animal was getting de cidedly odoriferous, and to make' matters worse a strong south wind' sprang up ana blew steadily for three days, carry lng the smell directly toward Keady's house and making the place smell like a fertiliser works. Keadv was lust pre- ? aping to paek up and move out when he wind changed, and life became once more endurable. Since the middle of last week Keady has put in most of his time trying to get rid of his whale. The animal la too Dig to bs moved,' even if there were any place to move it to, and It would take weeks to dig a hole deep enough and lone enough to bury the carcass in. Betting fire to the mass. For several days It has been burning fiercely, the oil in the whale's blubber adding to the flames. Today Keady announced that he had succeeded In burning up at least &0 feet of his whale, leaving him only 48 feet more of the whale to dispose of.- - The burning or the whale has left the ground piled high with the finest qual ity of bone ash, white and brittle, which will make excellent fertiliser. Keady is collecting this in sacks, and says he will scatter it over his yard and sow grass seed. He believes bis whale will yield him the finest blue grass lawn, to be found in the west. The strong points brought out' by Judge Cameron In his speech were those that had a bearing on economy and im partiality. The man bad for some unknown reason removed " bis . coat while doing his plundering. When he was about to leave the house, and before donning his coat, Mr. Wolff put In an appearance and made a dash for the robber, who ran,i leaving the coat behind. Wolff was fast gaining on the fugitive, when the latter turned suddenly and opened fire with two pistols. Mr. Wolff, being unarmed, dropped : to th ground when the firing began. The bullets went wide of their mark. Mr. Wolff pursued no further but immediately notified the police., ,:.- 1 Ths man escaped' from town minus his coat, and will doubtless be captured, as notice was Immediately wired to the officers of neighboring towns. the sum of $2,700 between the months January and May of this year for special counsel to prosecute casts that should have been prosecuted by the dis trict attorney. Besides thla. approxi mately $1,000 was paid to two inexperi enced men for detective work, where no detective work was needed. Judge Cameron also made the start ling statement and challenred truthful denial. That during all of the time John Manning has filled the office of district attorney he has never noted an appear ance in the supreme court of the state, nor have any of his deputies appeared for him or the office, although many important cases in which the stats was a party nave during mat period peen sent to the supreme court for adjudica tion. The interests of the taxpayers of the county in these cases have always been left In the handu of special coun sel, and the burden of expense Incident to their employment has beep, shoul dered on the community thst pays a district attorney and five deputies for duties tney do not penorm. Many of you will remember that of the Oregon Trust & Savings day when Mr. Manning came to Port land on noraebaog from somewnere u the Columbia river and made a speec in the Plasa. In that speech he declared that If any wrong had been done dei itors by the officials of the Ore Trust & Savings bank they would be prosecuted and sent to the penitentiary. No such prosecution has been begun, and none is contemplated. Whyf Look over the list of names of officials of that rotten Institution and you can guess the reason. They entered the postoffice by the rear and took a few dollars from the till, snd some stamps. They went out the front way and took some canned goods. They next entered the hardware store of eiearns cnenowetn. took all the fire arms in the show case and a quantity of ammunition. Then they entered the furniture store. C A. building at the Oregon Agricultural college, the con tract for which has Just been let to Charles Heckart of Corvallis, Sub-contracts have been let as follows: Theo dore Barr, Salem, steam heating; 8en ger & Freeman, Corvallis, plumbing; Western Electric company, Portland, wirtng; Northwest Bridge work. Port land, iron and steel. The total of all contracts Is $18,000. Work la to begin as soon as material can be placed on the ground and the building la to be completed by September ii or October 1. The plans are by Architect- Mc Naughton of Portland. Tha building was tar ted nearly three years ago and the foundation was laid, but owing to lack of funds it haa never been completed. The students them selves subscribed most generously and the assured success of the undertaking Is cause for general rejoicing..
