Irish Barrister Accuses Lord
Lieutenant and Chief Sec
retary of Theft.
' i" (Unlt4 Praia Leutd Win.)
London, , May -v Jl. Charging Lord
Aberdeen and Augustine Blrrell, respect
ively lord lieutenant and chief secretary
for Ireland- with stealing the crown
jewels, whlch fecntly disappeared from
XMiblln castle, a man who declared htm
self an Irish barrister, ha asked" the
Westminster polios court for a warrant
for Btrlell's arrest.
The magistrates told the applicant to
make his complaint to the public prose
tutor and, when he urged prompter ac
tion than the prosecutor can give, had
the attendants remove him rrom-tho
courtroom. .
The crown jewels mysteriously - dis
appeared soma months ago and no very
vigorous search was ever -made for the
culprit because, it was rumored, too
great a scandal' might result. No, one
thought, ' however, of connecting Lord
Aberdeen's or Secretary Birrells name
with ths theft. . '

London, May J!. -Star actors are at
a discount at present, In London, ow
ing to the dearth, of good' plays. One
of the biggest theatrical managers In
London has under his control S3 actors
and actresses of the front rank who
are out of work simply because no
plays can be found for them,
: Other managers of lesser 'magnitudo
report the same story, and on every
side the cry is heard that the British
playwrights seemed to. have lost their
cunning and that, - though the. man
agers' desks groan with the weight of
manuscripts, it seems impossible to ex
tract more than a very few good .plays
from the mass.
Of the new lights that have appeared
In the theatrical - heavens Somerset
Maugham seems to promise more per
manence and brilliance than any of the
younger school of dramatists. Of his

' London,' May 18. One of. the gravest
of his majesty's judges has created a
strange precedent by holding court Jn a
music hall, and witnessing the perform
ance of two rival vaudeville "turns" as
a practical way of deciding an Issue.
The case was an. action for Infringe
ment of theatrical copyright brought by
Fred ". Karno, who v-runs music ', hall
"sketches" or playlets, against Paths
Freres, a. flfm of blograph film-makers:
Karno had produced - a sketch called
"The Mumming Birds." a burlesque on
a music hall performance. The Pathes
had published a film called "At the Mu
sk; Hall," which contained similar in
cidents to some of those In the Karno
sketch.
: The rase came "before "Justice Jelf,
and after the case had been amged by
eminent counsel it was suggested that
his lordship should judge for himself
whether the film was a -colorable imi
tation of the sketch. ' Accordingly a
special matinee , was arranged at . the
Oxford music hail, at which the audi
ence .consisted of the Judge, counsel
and the parties interested, and the show
consisted of "The Mumming Birds," fol
lowed by "At the Music Hall.':

The couple immediately went to
housekeeping at the rectory, which was
luxuriously fitted up by Mr. Wilder,
