There appears to be a slight Improve ment in the lumber business. Rait or ders are said to show an Increase as compared with business of ' the past three months, although at low prices. The general consensus of opinion Is that the bottom has been reached and that the next material change will be for W the better, from a manufacturer's point Portland builders have been getting the benefit of a low market for several months, and many monuments in the shape of handsome rosldences testify thereof, i At no time in the city's history have morei dwellings sprung up dwell ings of such-handsome lines and ale ant finish as at present. And It is greed that the inviting; lumber prices have hod much to do therewith. r .1 huainiMM tm still reoorted very good, and indications are that conditions win warrant s uonimuwran B there might be a slight falling off dur nv ik. haiorht nt eummer. when a Qui etness is experienced in most lines of Industry! ana wnen tne Deacn ami moun tain resorts are tile main objects of In terest. J . Foreign business continues good, sev eral cargoes being on the list for export within the next few weeks. Some go to Europe, where there Is a good de mand for high-class decking and spar lumber, and others are booked for the orient and the antipodes. Part of one cargo goes to New Zealand, the first to be sent there from this district for a long time. .- Good crop prospects from all parts of the country are, giving the lumber men hope of an improved fall trade and better business next year, when re tail yards will be pretty well depleted unless they be stocked up In the mean- tlA'declsion is looked for In the rate advance case now before, the Interstate commerce commission, and a more set tled condition of the market is expect ed .when it finally-becomes known what rate really prevails on lumber from the coast to points east of the mountains. 1 At present there is a difference of 10 cents per 100 pounds that mlllmen do not know whether to absorb or not. , SCHOOLS JOIN TO BOOST FOR ALBANY tSveelal DUpateh to Th Joornil.l Albany, Or., May 23 Manager Bury I. Fools are generally lonar-lived. Ths one who rocks the boat always lives to tell about It. About as strong and unqualified an Indorsement of concrete as was ever rendered was that made at the - recent annual convention ol the American Railway Engineering and .Maintenance of Wav association held In New York. The members of this association met for purely practical purposes the compari son of experiences and observations of tne past year, and being engaged in du ties requiring the highest intelligence. iney are qualified to apeak with autnor lty on the subject of their work. The committee on buildings took into con slderation every phase relating to the construction of roundhouses, tbe de structive influences to - which these Dutidings are subjected and tbe eco nomic problems involved. Its -verdict was that In economy of first cost, dura bility and fire-resisting; qualities, there is no other fireproof roof construction which is equal to reenforced concrete. The committee went on to say .that a roof of this charaoter gives the great est freedom from possibility of Inter ruption by trait lo because of .fire, cy clone or earthquake, and that conse quently no Insurance is shown for the ooncrete roof roundhouses, while the others have a rate upon tbe entire value of each stall. Including foundations and pits, equipment and all accessories. xn another committee report, that on masonry, a toplo for consideration was present typical standard designs now in use for masonry culverts, both stone and concrete. On this toplo the commit tee's Introductory paragraph was as concise and suggestive as the reference to tne roundhouse quoted above. It said: "Your committee finds that stone structures of this class are raDidlv ro t n mi, n .... . 1 , . , ... is vu. us?, cuiu iiiciciui, elim inated them from consideration, and connnes itseir to concrete culverts -slain Thus stone work Is absolutely elimi nated from further consideration in a. field it formerly occupied to the exclu sion of practically every other material. If extended experiments and the prac tical use of concrete by experts of such prominence warrant them in indorsing it ior structures nxeiy to encounter the most severe tests to which a build ing material can be subjected, their re ports and conclusions should certainly go rar towara inspiring aonnasnce in those who still hesitate to adont con. crete for ordinary purposes.
