SAT CHARTS ARE FAULTY."" Gallilee Expedition Returns With . . Valuable Scientific Data. , United Press lVeased Wire.) San Francisco. Mar 82. News of lasting Interest in marine circles is brought to San Francisco in the an nouncement made by members of the Gallilee expedition of the Carnegie In stitute la Washington that the three Pacific ocean charts are in grievous er ror, being two and three degrees off in some instances. The expedition, which left San Diego, California, in the brig Gallilee, in De cember, 1906, has Just arrived in Ban Francisco, after a most successful sci entific research. The brig . was in charge of Captain H. Hayes and the other members of the party were W. J. Peters, P. Hr Dike and C E. Sowers. The primal aim of the expedition was for a magnetic survey or tne jacino ocean. Several theories of magnetism were verified and the ground broken for further research, but the important dis covery was that made relative to the error in the charts. After leaving sandiago the expedition headed for the South Sea islands. After cruising in that vicinity for several months the party made for Shanghai, thence north to Sitka, Alaska. The brig then sailed for Honolulu, the Mar shall islands and New Zealand. STEAMER WASHINGTON IN. Arrives From San Francisco With General Cargo. The steam schooner Washington.
