It took the Rostand 148 days to make
the run from Cherbourg, France, to the
Columbia river. She left London about
a week earlier, but put Into the French
port for provision for the voyage,

in all the bark covered about twice a
much distance as had she proceeded be
fore favorable winds. Even coming
around the Horn she was forced to sig
sag back and forth to gain headway.
The same tactics had to be employed
by the entire fleet and this added to the

Identity was established with
certainty, although at times the whole
fleet was well bunched. The one that
came close enough to permit the read
ing of her name on the bows was the
French bark BIdart, bound from Cher
bourg to Puget sound. She came dan
gerously near at one time and for a

Aside from being delayed by head
contrary winds, the voyage was unusu
al!" pleasant, no stormy weather naving
been encountered. In fact, the breezes

Toledo, Or., May 19. By a Are that
broke out at 10 o'clock last night the
gasoline launch Ella May Was "destroyed.
The launch was 13 feet beam, 66 feet
long, and owned by Altree & Scarth. It
was lying on the mud Just below Al
tree' sawmill, a mile west of town.
The value was $5,000. It Is a total loss,
as there was no Insurance. The crew
had been working on .her of late and
had Just left, when the steward, E. Nost,
started down Into the hold with a lan
tern. The gasoline , tank exploded and
blew Nost back on deck. He was badly
burned. The boat waa consumed In 20
minutes. - v .

The Italian bark Emanuel Accame ar
rived at the mouth of the Columbia
this morning. She 1 bound for this
port with a cargo of cement consigned
to Kerr, GIfford & Co. She comes from
Hamburg.
The steamer Charles R. Spencer did
not leave for The Dalles this morning,
and she will probably not get away for
Astoria owing to some changes being
made in the boilers.
The steam schooner Washington left
Ban Francisco for the Columbia river
yesterday. The steamer Eureka left
here last night for Eureka via Coos
Bay. and the steamer Northland Is due
to arrive tonight from Ban Francisco
to load lumber for a return cargo.
The large steam schooner Olson Ma
honey will be in the harbor this after
noon to load wheat for San Francisco.
She comes consigned to W. T. Carroll.
