"Mrs. Wlggs of the Cabbage Patch. By J.F. S. ' It was like the meeting of old friepds to be at the Helltg- last night for prac tically every tone In 'the house had seen Mrs. Wiggs before and had returned to renew the acquaintance for a second or perhaps a third time. And when the curtain went down on Miss Haiy and her cookbook and the -audience iturned to leave the theatre nobody minded the fact that It had been raining, i hours and the heavens were still pouring. Mrs. Wlggs had worked" another of her wonders and had . converted another damp and gloomy lot-ef people to -ber doctrine of cheerfulnessx- : The seams and the basting threads show in "Mrs. Wlggs,"and it does not run as smoothly as tt might, but that Is merely incidental .. to the .fact that as an avenlna's entertainment U Is', a ucceas; It Is a convincing bit of real-4 Ism for mucn 01 tne time, ana u leaves one with a brighter,, happier aspect of life. And the well constructed .'plays that do that are no,t legion.. . . This season the company, which is bound for a sr round-the-world tour, ' la excellent In 'most particulars; Helen Iowell is delightful as the . pesslmistio. Miss Hasy, and 'tltoae who- have seen her before In the part Will remember the unusual degree of excellence, that has been attained by. her. v It has be come a really notable' bit, of acting. Blanche Chapman,' chief - spokesman 'of Alice Hegan Rice's, gospel -oft cheerful ness, if she nas . not improved. Is at least as' good as she was, whifchi was quite good enough to assure thousands of converts, and. Lottie Alter is slntple and natural as Lovev Mary.'The Lovey Mary incident, by . the way, loses, per haps necessarily, some of Its -exquisite pathoa, ln4the dramatisation of. the : play. The addition of a melodramatic flourish or two kills much. of the senti ment that" 'was concerned in the care of Mary for Tommy. But it still shines out as one. of the very flee examples of Mrs. Rice's character., drawing. ' The parts of' the ; two Wlggs i boy, Chris and Billy, are exceptionally, well taken, tfee one by -Eugene -Bhakespeare and the other , by Argyle Campbell, two as promising young actors as Llebler A Co. have had for many a. season. The other parts character parts, of course are all well done with the exception of Mignon, Douglas, who plays Miss LUcy,: Baggott le simply . unconvlnclnghT mignc oe. anytning or tnyocray... axxv Miss Douglas .is lamentable.. Their ar rival, a la- motor car is not without Us element of humor. For upon last re ports from the Kentucky metropolis the Louisville newspaper reporters were , not owning their own automobiles.
