concerning the use. or adaptability of
Belgian blocks as a paving material
other than to say that if Portland had
' a few streets paved with the same brick
that Seattle's heavy traffic streets are
paved with, the property ""owners, the
team owners, and- the- cltlsens in gen-
eral -would soon be of the same mind
here as in Seattle, that real vitrified
brick is preferable to stone blocks. During-
the past 10 or, 12 years certain
streets tn ' Portland- were paved - with
brick which was either "made in Ore-
fon" or-within Itt miles -of the city of
ortland, and has ben pronounced, in
ferior and unsuited to our needs.-. "

from the engineering departments of
Cleveland, Ohio, St. Louis, - Missouri,
and Columbus. Ohio,-wherein-Is stated
that during tne past three years the
city of Cleveland laid about 75 miles of
pavement, -three miles of which, were
asphalt, two miles of limestone mac
adam, and 62 miles of brick pavement
In St. Louis, Missouri, during the same
period, 16 miles of asphalt were laid, 17
miles of bltuilthlc. six miles of granite
block and 44 miles .of vitrified brick. :
In Columbus. ' Ohio, during the same
period, 400,000 square yards' of asphalt
were laid, 176,000 square yards of stone
block, but of vitrified brick there-wers
laid 1,822.188 square yards. .
