Yesterday opened the season for small arms target practice of the Oregon No tional guard, and from early morning Until late in the afternoon the crash of the ar.ari'smen'a new Springfield rifles was beard or. a dozen ranges throughout the state. The Portland companies used the old run are beyond the City Park, a derinlte arrangements nave not yet oeen concluded for taking over the new range ground near Troutdale. Details from three local infantry com panies and from the field and staff of the TMrcT miantry were mijwn to ino range for yesterday's practise, work beginning at 8 o'clock in the morning and continuing until f. tn the afternoon. While many of the men were near and had never had experience on a rifle range, the scoring waa well up t the average. The guardsmen wore equipped with the new Springfield gun. which was is sued to the O. N. G. only a few weeks ago, replacing the Krag rifle, the only 5un that most of the men had ever used, owever the change seemed to make no difference with the snooting or the ex nerlenced men. It is claimed by the government that the new gun la ihe best military rifle ever issued to United States troops, and equal to any rifle now in use in the world. Only the ?C0-ysrd range was used in Portland yesterday. Adjutant-General Flnser hones to be able to close the deal for the new range ground east of the city witmn a snort time, when ranges up to 1,000 yards will be Im mediately built and the grounds made ready for the use of the guardsmen this summer. Few play have stood the test of re production as ha Paul Armstrong's "The Heir to the Hoorah." There must be reasons for this and there axe. It tells a simple story plainly and enter tainingly. The comedy la good, though now and then a bit strained. There Is comparatively little exaggeration. And most of all the story of the reconcilia tion of the two chief characters through the coming of the belr himself is sweet and clean and true at least w all like to think it's true. Although lacking some of the elab orate scenic investitures that former productions In Portland have been giv en the performance at the Baker yes terday was fully as entertaining as the others In some respects the acting was better than that In the road produc tions, while Mr. Alison was, at least as good as Guy Bates Post in the part of Joe Laay. He was perhaps a trifle too rflnd no woman under heaven could take Offense at the Immaculate Joe that Mr. Alison gave. True, upon his return from Europe the wearing of an extremely new suit carried with It a slight air of consciousness a knowledge that the creases were new and to bo guarded, and an enjoyment of the fact that he was looking par ticularly well but his quiet manners were quite irreproachable. And Miss Jewellthe part of Mrs. Joe is not a great, one but a delicate one and the leading woman played It with sympathy and understanding. It's a girlish sort of a part and Miss Jewell played it in a charmingly girlish man ner unaffectedly and well. But the sensation of the day was the appearance of Lawrence Edward Oleason. tne infant son of Mr. m.i Mrs. James Gleason and incidentally the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. William Glea- son all of the Baker Stock company, ' thank you. The poor child was care-i f ully exhibited to the delighted audi- ence who of course howled their heads ! off and demanded more of him, to the! mingled pride and fear of the young ' father. The moat serious thing about the first appearance was the interest-! ing possibility that in 80 years from 1 now he'll be telling interviewers of: that first appearance on any stage, ij always watch first' appearances with' a sickening Interest to wonder if when I grow old and doddering myself 111! be interviewing these youngsters and i hearing the same old story about the when I, as a babe in arm, was ear ned oui ror- tne audience to behold sort of rot- I hope Mr. Oleason brings his young man up to he a bank clerk. Louise Kent's Kate Brandon waa a bit overdrawn and lost in effect there by. William Gleason'a Lon Perry w. a totally original conception of the part of the cowboy and Wot a particularly i good one, while Hilda Graham's Madge Casey was good and show careful work. ; James uieason's Dave Lacy was good, ! one or the best rileces of the nlav and Donald Bowles" KeHy was bad, ex cepting ror one Drier scene with Miss Kent, cnanes Lewis ana Konald Brad bury are both steadily Improving in tneir work. Heilig -"Mrs. Temple's . Telegram." At least as reaaonable a farce aa any that comes around, and vastly more entertaining than most is "Mrs. Tem ple's Telegram." It has extremely funny situations, the lie are most en tertaining aa lie are apt' to be, and the fun Is wholesome and uproarious. When it was first presented in Lon don years ao with Emery aa the ere. ator. of the husband's role. It was hailed as the beet farce the British metropo lis had seen and It still retains much of the sparkle of its youth. William Bernard, who wa formerly with the . Baker company in Portland as stage I manager, plays the part of Jack Temple and it must be confessed, does It but indifferently well. Ha lno all the fine humor that the lines offer ror tne eomprenenaing, ana make It broad, almost horsey farca. Josenh Dal ley makes a most excellent Wigson nd Margurite Snow, who 1 - pretty and rather a good Actress, is pleasing as the wife who wouldn't believe her husband's tale of being caught in the exposition wheel.
