The government snagboat -Mathloma and 'a , dipper -dredge left the govefn mept mooring near Llnnton this mdrn 7 in for Black Dog. bar about M mile; up the Willamette from Portland and 73 miles this side of Eugene. The snagboat and dredge will probably be kept in operation on thia stretch of channel for the greater part of the sum mer with a view of having it Improved in fine shape. .The river has been In very good condition so far, but the not weathor that is certain to follow dur ing, the summer will tell on the river, and the dredge will be put to work at once so aa to have the channel clear for navigation when the river begins to fall. ; NOTICE TO MARINERS. Ss ' The oriental liner Nloomeilla Is to leave down this afternoon bound for ' Hongkong- via Yokohama with a cargo ' of flour, lumber and freight of general t character valued at $58,618. This Is the t least valuable cargo ever shipped out of this port on an oriental liner ainee the ' big steamers were placed on the route. The a mall value of the cargo Is due ' to the fact that a large flour shipment ' waa made a few ' days ago on the 5 British tramp steamer Sheila and great i- quantities of lumber are being aent to China on trampe. , - . . The fire Is believed to have been caused either deliberately or carelessly by the Tabasco gang, a tough crowd of youns; boys who made the lumber shed where the fire started a loaf in ir place In thia building the company has stored all Us moldings and sashes, and the blaze may have been started by a light ed cigarette belnr thrown among th dry and inflammablewood.- workmen returning: to the lumDer yard yesterday morning at 1:46 say there was no evidence of fire at that time, either in the lumber yard or In the Woodman house adjoining, which was also burned.. The alarm was turned In a little after S o'clock by W. D. Woodman, who was roused out of a sound slumber by the crackling of the flames. Familiar Character in Shipping Cir cles Near Point of Death. y John L, Betts. shlnnlna master for the Sailor's home of this city and one of the most familiar characters along the harbor front, ,1s 111 with pneumonia at his residence, 1088 Thurman street, with hope of recovery practically aban doned. - .. At noon to day his condition waa alarming and his wife and young daughter were at the bedside in anticipation of hia death oc curring any moment. Mr. Betts, familiarly known among his friends and business acaun.lnta.ncen as "Captain" Betts, arrived in Portland nearly a quarter or a century ago and for several years engaged In the ahlp chandlerlng business under the firm name of Brown Betts, his partner being a brother of the .. late Captain Brown of Brown & McCabe, stevedores. He has a brother. Captain Al Betts, a Columbia and Willamette river pilot, who lives at Astoria. Mr. Betts was born in St Johns, Nova Sootla. and came to this coast on a sail ing vessel around the-Horn. 1 He located in San Francisco and lived there for a while. Then he came to Portland for a short stay, but went back to' the city ef the Golden Gate.
