Taylor announced today that tha beautiful granite water fountain donated to the city by the Na tional Humane socletv will be erected in a few daya, - The monument will be erected at ' Sixth and Ankeny street. City Engineer Taylor ald that the monument would be so placed that it would not Interfere with teama passing on either street and yet would be easily accessible for the tired and thirsty ani mals. There are about nine other foun tains to be erected by the city engineer, all donations f rom 'citizens. - These wiU be put In a position and ready for use before tne Kose Festival. The annual meeting of the Lovers of Zlon society, held Sunday, May 1, at the First and Hall street synagogue. was very enthusiastic. The following officers -were unanimously elected for the ensuing term: I. Bromberg. presi dent; H. Rosencranta, vice-presiaent: j. Currey, owner and editor of tha La Grande Observer, is in Portland, the guest of Councilman W. T. Vaughn. Both men have just returned from Ash land, where they were delegates to the national convention of the Modern Wood men of America to be held in Indiana p olla in June. Mr. Currey will leave for La Grande today. The other delegates to tne convention are unanes weauown. Portland; George G. Pell, Medford, and M. H. Kendall. Junction City. Single tax will be discussed pro and con at the People's Forum In the Sell-lng-Hlrsch building next Sunday even ing. Attorney Walter McCamant will be the first speaker against this pro- fiosed amendment. H. A. Mosher will alk in favor of tax reform. The meet ing wHl then be thrown open for gen eral discussion. Admission will be free, and the meeting will be called to order at 8 o'clock. The general public is in vited to attend. The Rev. John Faulkner Potts, a dis tinguished scholar and clergyman of the Swedenborgtan faith, will preach at the Knights of Pythias hall at Eleventh and Alder streets, next Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. All Swedenborglane and others Interested are Invited to attend. Over 20 years of Mr. Potts' life were occupied in the production of the "8wc denborg Concordance;," comprising six volumes of nearly 1.000 pages each. He la an ordaining minister In the church. J. Kennard, E. T. Peterson, Dr. Ham ilton Meade, F. Smith and B. L. Boone have been appointed by the South Mount Tabor Improvement association to attend the meeting of the United East Side Push clubs next Tuesday evening. This committee was selected by Presl rent E. T. Peterson of the Mount Tabor issorlatlon to get the help of the club In securing better sanitation for the South Mount Tabor schools. Fifth and Yamhill streets. , The health and police committee of the council referred Councilman Baker's resolution to remove sirens from auto mobiles to the automobile board of reg istry at a meeting held today. One au tomohllist recently spent $50 for a siren and says that it plays beautiful music. He is indignant to think that he Is In danger of having to throw the siren away. Water through hose for sprinkling yards or sidewalks or washing porches or windows must be paid for in advance and used only between the hours of 5 and 8 a. m. and 6 and 9 p. m. It must not be used for sprinkling streets. If used contrary to these rules or waste fully It will be shut off. Nick Batllck was convicted In the .circuit court yesterday on the charge of aswault upon W. W. Cutler and sen tenced to pav a fine of $60 by Judge Clelend. In the lower court Batllck was sentenced to serve 60 days In Jail, and as one day equals $2. he did twice as well in the upper court. Penney Bros.' UNCONSCIOUS LOCKSTEP BETRAYS EX-CONVICT Lamont Insley, expert penman, ex convlct, with a record of five years In the Kansas penitentiary and three In the Missouri institution, and who has been Identified as a former employe of the Oregonlan in Woodland, washing ton, where he forged receipts securing $18, was arrestee! by Officer Teevin Thursday morning about 2 o'clock and this morning sentenced to 80 days in Judge Cameron's court. Insley confessed that he was Just pre paring to do a porch climbing job when arrestedi Officer Teevin became auspi cious of Inalev by the latter's walk, which gave evidence of long lock-step marches. The most popular girls In town this week are "The Bathing Qlrls," at the Star theatre. This is a lively little musical comedy, which Is being played by the Armstrong company. There Is a laugh every minute, and the bill Is made up of many jokes, songs and dances. Drama and Fun. It is an odd mixture that la found this week at the Orand, for there Is drama and comedy on the bill. The drama is a little playlet, "The Visitor," presented by Porter J. White and the little tabloid Is the strangest of its kind to be sent to Portland. "The Merry Widow's Return." For the third week of musical comedy at the Star theatre the Armstrong com pany will present the latest offering. The Merry Widow's Return." This will commence next Sunday matinee.
