and seems to have paralysed the whole

At first he was confident the use of the

'skeptical about - the foot, but now he
-says the whole limb may be paralyzed
and at the beat will require a very long
time to be of any use.- Mrs. Porter now
can move about only a short distance
and that with the aid of erutches. The
right limb Is entirely numb.

- Passengers on the elevator at the
' time were inclined to blame the boy for'
the carelessness. but It seems to de
velop that the blame goes farther back
than that. It 1 alleged that the ele

P. H. Preston on the Santiam river
about 20 miles above Lebanon waa de
stroyed bT fire Friday night with a
large quantity of fine lumber. The
origin of the fire Is unknown. Mr.
Preston estimates nis - toss at about
$2,000, with no Uisuranoe. The loss is
s. hard blow, as Mr. Preston was Just
getting started in tha milling business.

Lebanon. Or., May 4. W. H. Beard,
a well-known farmer who lived two
miles east of Lebanon and who shot
himself about 10 days ago while de
mented and In charge of officers, has
died at his home from the effects of
the shot. He never regained . conscious
ness. : -- i-
Beard was born in this county- about
five miles east of this place, and spent
his entire life in Linn county. He was
about 38 years old and leaves a wife
and three children, two sisters and a
brother. .
