THE , OREGON SUNDAY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, ' SUNDAY ' MORNING, MAY 3, . 1908. IS GROUP OF BRAVE NEW YORK POLICEMEN- J 4 V ' ' ' I r" v SUSSES v This U a group of policemen of whom New York City s prcfcd. Every man of them has risked his life, one or mora times to save the lives of others, and each has received a medal for bravery, ' Three of" them will receive new'medals during the police parade, which is scheduled for May 2. The brave fellows, who have gone through fire and water, riots and other sources of danger, quailed before the timid photog rapher who trained his camera on them. STRAY NOTES FROM NEW YORK , ,BTW YORK, May 1 Thar have new wrinkle la the Grand Cen- TVT I tral station that Is deatlned to A 1 make man with weak hearts live longer, and Incidentally protect the email and unathletlo persona from 'bains trampled underfoot by those who lira always trying- to catch the train ahead. The new rule forbids anyone running In the station In an effort to catch his train. A number of stalwart policemen are on hand to enforce the rule. They grab the hurrying train catcher, tell him he its endangering- lives by rushing at break mack speed through the crowd, andthen Jet him go on hla way. Ha generally fcrrlves at his track just In time to have It he gate closed in hla face, and see the Oast car of hla train pulling out of the tatlon. Hard times are Working both ways n New York. While certain classes of uslness have' been obliged to go into ankruDtcv. others are waxlnar fat dur- ng the financial stringency.. Just at resent the owners of the mar storage warehouses are reaolnr the benefit, and "the proprietors of the apartment houacs aura ma losers. Hundreds of the well to do families Jiave been obliged to give up their apart inents, put their goods In storage and cither resort to boarding houses or go Into the country where living is cheaper. On the whole the hard times have affected the very poor and the very rich.. The salaried class have felt the stringency less than any others. The new "pay as you enter" cars which have now been In use on Madison avenue for over a month have proved a success and Manhattanites are wonder ing how long it will be before some of the other lines will follow suit. The old fashioned cars are still in use on Broadway in spite of the heavy traffic, and on some of the cross streets horse oars are still run. Visitors to the city are generally more surprised to find horse cars in Gotham than almost any thing else that oomes to their notice. , The new cars on Madison avenue, however attract a great deal of atten tion, and already some of theenterprls ing stores have put on sale a "pay-as-you-enter belt" with a little pocket at tached for change. It is planned soon to place a nlckel-ln-the-alot machine 'n the oars and have each passenger drop In his' own faro. It is thought that In this way the conductor will have all of his time to give to assisting passengers on and off the car. and thus minimise the number of accidents. In order to meet the tremendous de mand for experienced office boys the New York public schools are now con templating giving a course to train boys In all branches of office work. Th3 experiment Is already being tried In one school and if It proves a Bureaus it will probably be made part of the whole scheme to train the nubile school chil dren in some trail that will enable them to earn a living as soon as they are graduated. ' Although there are hundreds of auc tions of every kind In New York every day, the ones that attract most atten tion are those disposing of the personal effeots, however alight their Intrlnsia value may be, of some person In the public eye. This was .strikingly Illus trated recently in the sale of the house held furnishings of Mrs. Leslie Carter, the famous actress. The goods were ordered sold by Mr. Carter's receiver In bankruptcy, and the many friends of the noted fool light favorite thronged the auction rooms In an effort to get some memen to. Even the kitchen things had a price. Notable among these was a wash wringer that brought $1.25, although Its working days were over. A lot marked "two bottles" brought a nickel. A curious document 32 years old. waa found in a sealed drawer in an old safe In the finance Uepartment the oth er dav that revealed the fact that bri bery was not unknown to Jotliu.ni of ficials even in those days. The letter, which was addressed to the comptroller of that time, was from a man employed in the finance department. The letter read as follows: "Enclosed please find $10, which Is bribe money received from J. R Wright There U a drive In It, I think, and should be kept a secret at preBent" The J. R. Wright mentioned in the letter is not known to Mr. MetE, pres ent comptroller, and he propose to conduct art Investigation of this 82 year old graft. In spite of the bribery that la going on before Ma eyes every day.-., , . In the fashionable Raster parade on Fifth avenue on Raster mnrnlni. when it was possible to see the lastest styles In Parisian gowns and French millinery, one woman who was attired In rather a rusuo costume attracted moat attention. Bhe waa accompanied by a young man, who also looked as though he had not been born and bred In New York. The woman waa dressed all In white ex cept for dark "sash" around bar waist. , - ' , .The sash happened to be the arm of the young man, and the two young peo ple were apparently unconscious of the Interest they were creating in the minds of the fashionable crowd along the ave nue where people are more circumspect than in the shady lanes of the country. But everybody stopped to, look, and IT". .Yr th comments. Patrons of the Lowell lunch room, a hurry-up hunger haunt, at No. 248 Blghth avenue, ceased the attack on the provender when John Heingman "of No. 47 King street, blew intq the placi yesterday afternoon and gave the whole sale order In a voice that shivered the crockerjfc One of John's eyes had an early closing slgu on It and n gash In his forehead showed that, whatever happened to the other fellow. John did not have things entirely his own way. "Quit yer klddin'," said Patsy, tha chef. "Take an egg sandwich and cheer up. f "I'm 61 years old and I guess I know what I. want." answered John, boardlna moving stool and unsettlnir n c-nn of corree in his neighbors lap. "1 run eat egg faster than you can fry them." "You're on." said Patsy, his sport ing blood aroused. "I'm taking no chances, though. Post yer forfeit." Heingman dug down in his drapery and deposited a crumpled $2 bill on tha alab. Patsy passed It to one of the customers foiv safe-keeping, and then lapped a hair pound of butter In the pan. The crowd gathered around Heing man, and several dollars In small bets changed hands on the result. The bursting of egg shells was the only sound that shattered the stillness for several minutes. "lirlng on the goods" roared Heing man, tying a napkin round his neck and tapping Impatiently with hla knife. Patsy came on a run and slapped half a dozen on the plate. Heingman stacked mem up ana cut them into quar ters with two stabs of his sabre. A few seconds later the plate was deserted save for a saffron rim round the edge showing where some of the" hen fruit had tried to escape. "Slowest cook I ever saw," mused Heingman, as Patsy dumped another half dozen on the platter. They met the same fate as the others, and then Patsy tried to claim a foul on the ground that Heingman was putting them in his pocket. The excited patrons urged Patsy to be a sport, and he resumed his tank. Patsy made six round trips, carrying half a dosen fried passengers on each journey, but Heingman was' always waiting for him. "You win, sport," said Patsy, drop ping Into a chair, with the perspiration racing down his cheeks. "There's no more eggs." "Gimme a piece of pie," said Heing man, "and I'll be on- my way. Some day when I'm hungry I'll drop in and give you a real exhibition." ....... ' i : .'v' . . My methods are entirely original with me, and are the result of many yeara of special study and experience. Instead of filling my pattents up with powerful drugs and stimulants, as do other specialists, 1 apply sooth ing and healing and absorbent medicines DIRECTLY to the DISEASED REGION, and thus aid Nature in overcoming the tronble. The best that human skill can do ls to ASSIST NATURE. It ls Nature that performs the cures. Powerful drugs taken through the stomach do not cure. They merely apt up a new disturbance in the system, which for a time, diverts the energies from the oli disease to the new attack.- This process is in variably attended with a reaction, and la -consequence leaves the patient In a worse condition than before treatment. Another method employed by another class of physicians Is to dose the sufferer with tonics, which exhilarate the patient so that he actually believes himself Improving un der such treatment. But after a very short time these stimulant medicines cease producing the desired effect, when the disease (alas a new and firmer grip upon the patient. ' MOW X CTOXB. -. . . My method of treatment overcomes Inflammation and congestion by aiding tha tissues of the diseased region to throw off the poisonous se cretions and the deadly toxins caused by the disease. Some of these toxlna are more poisonous than the virus of the rattlesnake's fang, and when 'they reach tho heart,, produce instant death. Thousands of the oases of sudden death which occur with alarming frequency In every city In the land, are directly due to toxic, poison, although such cases are usually pronounced "heart failure" or heart disease. My treatment com- fdetely eliminates every trace of diseese and accumulated poisona from he system, and thua allows Nature to perfect l COMPLETE CURE. DO SOT BB DECEIVES. My methods have revolutionised the treatment of ailments peculiar to men, and consequently altered former medical theories. Imitators of my system of practice have sprung; up everywhere.
