H -t ifr- THE OREGON. SUNDAY - JOURNAL, PORTLAND,1 SUNDAY ' MORNINQ, MAY 3, 1908. Activity,, of Swifts Puts Backbone in Property Ji - on Peninsula. IXCEEASED PRICES ' APE RULING MARKET Twenty-Fire Foot Lots Now Selling " for Two and Thre Times m Much . ' Paid Heretofore Opinions on Market Differ. -' When 2S-foot lots tn the Swift Pack- ln eoronany's townsite command the attention of conservative Investors and are eagerly bought up at prices two and three times aa great aa any figures heretofore paid for penieula lota, there Is conclusive evidence or a wiaespreaa belief that the big packing interests of the middle west have determined to make Portland the most important meat-packing center on ths -Pacific coast.' '. Daring the past week two lots In what Is to become the business center of Kenwood were sold to bona-f Ide pur chasers for $1.$$ each. Seven lots in ths same tract were sold to ,one pur chaser for $4,$00. while numerous trans fers were noted In Kenwood of lots in the business area selling for from $1,000 - to $1,600. These are, or course, the top prices for peninsular property, although lots in the vicinity of Maegly junction. East St Johns an McKenna Junction lave' brought very attractive figures since immediately titer it became an es tablished face that the Swift plant would go VP on the peninsula. Demand for Xiots. Among local realty dealers there Is a wide diversity of opinion as to market condttiona' Those firms that make a specialty of handling snburban tracts and those that deal exclusively in medium-priced residence sites in the bet ter class of residential districts ex press the utmost satisfaction with mar ket conditions. But the firms that han dle high-priced inside holdings in either residence or business sections are.dla-i satisfied with the volume of trading. . The week Just closed was without un usual or sensational features so far as 1 trading in real estate la concerned. A steady inquiry for Income-paying In vestments, with a fair increase in the i volume of 'sales, correctly summarises the Week's bualness. ' . V Realty brokers and investors are look ing forward. with pleasure i to the next excursion of the realty ' board, which !ls scheduled to take place next Satur day.
