Captain Laesen declares that for 84 'days straight he had to battle wan tubborn head winds. , "Only one day did the wind blow In our favor," said the captain last night In speaking of the voyage, "and then w made the best of it We were near the mouth of the Columbia, and hoped that at last the spell had been broken, but It was all In vain,, for before mid night the breeze had again veered around, and It was up to us to resume bealUig against It I never saw such luck. Try what we would, It seemed Impossible to work Into a favorable bvlt. everywhere It was from the oppo site WrtiPr,-'V ; . , The Mindoro was out long enough al most to cause her going on the reinsur ance board, but somehow friend of Captain Laesen felt certain she would come In all right and that nothing but contrary winds could possibly be to blame for her tardiness. - And she reached Astoria Thursday night looking as snick and span as had she been, out only a few days. She came ud the river yesterday and berthed at the Pacific company's bunk ers at 7 o'clock last night, where she will discharge her cargo of 2.000 tons of coal. In the meantime her owners will cast; about for new business, no ; charter for outward loading having been ctoaed so far as Captain Laesen Is in ' formed. . When In midoeean Second Officer W. Echroeder. fell overboard from the poop deck and drowned. A boat was lowerej as soon as the accident was discovered, but despite the fact that he was picked up In less'than Krurinntesrlichroeder ' was dead. Schroeder had been chewing tobacco, and in the. excitement Incident to his going overboard swallowed part of it, with the result that . It choked hfm. ' This accounted for his bodjK're malning afloat, although the man ap parently made no attempt to swim. The body was consigned to the deep With the usual ceremonies. Schroeder was aged about 60. years, and hailed from Port Blakeley, where he formerly worked at longshoring. In drifting about in the tropics the schooner ran close to several Islands, but the natives' made no attempt to reach her. , ' The voyage of the Mindoro .lends a schooners Cascade, . Captain Laesen of the Mindoro reports no unusually severe . weather In his path, and it is therefore taken as not altogether improbable that the missing bark might have fallen Into one of the prolonged calms and either drifted ashore on a remote coral reef or gotten so far out of her course that she is stui siowiy making her way . toward her destination.
