FOREIGN- AID1 HELPS SAWMIUS Large Orders From Distant Quarters Keep Plants in Operation. , LOCAL BUSINESS CONTINUES ACTIVE Prices on All Classes of Material Considerably Lower Than a Tear Ago and This Is Attributed to "Strong Activity in Building Line. There have been no Indications of fluctuation In building material price during the past week. Lumber remain from ft to 86 per thousand cheaper than a year ago and a consequence thereof is great activity in the building lln. But for a brisk local demand some sawmill tn this vicinity would prob ably have to close down a good part of the time. Rail shipments are tlll very light as compared with buslnes prior to th advanced freight rate which went Into effect, last November. The ap proach of summer ha stimulated traf fic to a certain extent but not sufficient ly to stamp It even satisfactory. Mills with good water transportation facilities are keeping buay on foreign Order of which a number have been captured of late, and but for these some Of the largest plants tn the city would have difficulty to keep going. More than a dosen million feet were started for foreign port during April, and In- aications are mat May wiu aiao roil up a good record. China, Australia, South America and South Africa are buying In response to the low prices. ' while mtllmen, like men In any other line of business, regret having to quote bedrock prices, the business now being done on the strength thereof Is expect ed to lead to new connection that In the future might prove more profitable. During the paat month aeveral ordera for vary high-class finished material were filled, a somewhat new departure. While Jo the past the average cargo of about 8.000,000 feet has been estimated worth from 840.OO0 to 860,000, one cargo hipped a few week ago wa valued at $111,000. a good portion of the shipment being the nlghest grade of finishing lumber. ' Shingles show no change In price and there is enough to go around for all fiu eposes without having to watt fur dv iveriea. The great building actlvitr ha resulted In a lively call for mill work and none of the sash and door fac tories complain of lack of bualness. Price ' are lower than last year, how ever, in conformity with tn lumber market. GONGRETHND STEEL" WILL SUPPLANT WOOD Newest Building Material to Solve Problem of Disap pearing Timber. Th great hop for the prolongation of th timber supplies, says Cement Age, lies In educating th people of the country to the necessity of scientifi cally managing the forest, and the ne cessity of preventing wate. This mean th use of every part of the tree cut, the stopping of destructive fnraat flrM which hava consumed aa much timber as has been cut; stopping destruction of young growth, of bark cutting, ana It means me employment of preservatives, to prolonw, the life of the timber used. Unfortunately this matter has' been taken up too late to gain all the benefits desirable. Prompt action, such as Is being encouraged through theOfcienu of forestry, may, however, place this country In a much better position than European countries, the 'forest resources or whloh were practically depleted oerore remmi measures were takenr The next snd even greatest hope for the forest lies in the rapidly extending use of concrete as a substitute for wood in all kinds of building and structures. xne raw ciay ana ctmeni-mums ma terials, sand and gravel, are practically unlimited In the United States. We mint tharafora look to these as substi tutes for Iron and timber in structural work, if the lire or tnese is to do ex tnriml tn anv reasonable future period. Thla substitution Is not only helpful In preventing the waste of the materl ala Involved, but is also a gain In that structure built of concrete are lees liable to destruction by fire or earth quake. Since the earthquake and fire In San Francisco, nearly .100 new buildings have been erected In San Francisco of reenforced concrete, and un questionably this calamity has had the effect of greatly hastening the adoption of this material, of which more than one third of the bualness buildings of San nvrmlMo are belnar built. The struc tures made of this material are prac tically Indestructible. It may be said that they will last forever, since the material gains atrength with age. Re pair bills are reduced to a minimum, where floors, roofs and exterior surface finish are of cement and concrete. With the problems arising from the waste of money in perishable construc tion, and with the growing scarcity and consequent Increase In the price of wood, the search for a desirable substi tute becomes a matter of prim impor tance.
